Cards on the Table - Jerry Sadowitz

£15

3 - 4
(1=easy to do, 2=No sleights, but not so easy, 3=Some sleights used,
4=Advanced sleights used, 5=Suitable for experienced magicians only)
You definitely need to know your pass, zarrow and a few other bits and pieces…and to be honest, I've struggled with a couple of effects - and it's made me track down a few others books too to learn them…which can only be a good thing really..

Review
High quality magic from mr. Sadowitz…this is my first purchase of anything by the man. And im very glad I did. Every single effect is classy and indeed classic in its presentation. Jerry is obviously a huge fan of Roy Walton as there's a dedication in the front of the book to him, and few of the effects are based on Roy's too.

Ok - there's 25 effects in total. I won't, and in all honesty, can't review all of them due to certain shortcomings in my card-skills…but im working on that.

Fetch - is an animated card discovery, where you send your well trained Ace of Spades into a fan of cards to track down the card the spectator picked…

Name a card triumph - can be done off the cuff…the spectator names a card, you riffle shuffle the deck half face-up and face-down; then instantly spread the deck….its all facing the same way, except…dah-dah-dah! One card…the spectators…

There's also a section on Pre-determined estimation, of which I'll say no more in the hope you'll buy the book, all I'll say is…blimey!

And A million in One - a spectator shuffles the deck, cuts them into two piles, one's all reds, the other all blacks…

Overall

Good god. This is the man that originally grabbed my attention with magic as a teenager (Pall-bearer's Funeral) . Absolutely superb. Buy the damn thing, Feel that strange warm glow you get when you suddenly crack the handling and giggle like a child to yourself. I'll definitely be buying the other books too…come payday obviously…

I always thought it a shame that he never had his own series purely for magic…

I love this book. "Aces and Kings" was of the first tricks I got to grips with and is guaranteed to improve your pass.

I'm currently working on the 'Name a Card Triumph'. Got the first section (of 3) pretty much there but am struggling with the nessecary glimpse.

Nice review.

Also worth a look is "Card Zones" the combined works of Sadowitz and Duffie. It contains Jerry's 'Cards Hit' book, which is also a classic.

Jerry's stuff is brilliant. If you get a chance to pop into International Magic (Clerkenwell Road in London), he is usually there doing his stuff. Funny and slick! Look forward to getting this book!

a quick question

Postby spudgun » Feb 25th, '08, 14:46

im seriously thinking about getting this and thought id ask first tho

Does this have an explanation of the sleights involved (sort of like the complete Walton) or are you just expected to know. I think im quite good now and i may well know them but jerry is a proper stunning cardician and wheras i dont mind knuckle busting stuff...id be dissapointed if it read like swahili poetry to me

or can someone suggest a companion that would teach the slights

apologies to any swahili poets :D

nah...from memory at least, you're expected to know half-passes and so on...i dont think he teaches any stock moves, but maybe ones of his own...ive not got the book to hand...

i've now got all sadowitz's books, inspirations and the mini compendium card zones are my faves..with the wonderous mr. duffie too naturally...

Yes just to agree with Abraxus here, he doesn't teach the stock moves. Though he does show one or two of the more esoteric sleights; a Dai Vernon add-on move amongst others.

Mind you, it did inspire me to find out more about certain moves. I remember spending forever trying to figure out what a Zarrow was.

I bought it when I was a relative beginner and shelved it almost immediately. When I returned to it a year later I found it brilliant.

So there you go.

...It's on it's way. £15 is a great price, but still a fortune for a broke student.
