Essays...

Postby Mark Smith » May 10th, '06, 15:15

This isn't as dull as it sounds!

I recenlty read, 'Just some food for thought', which was an interesting essay style post regarding performance and character in the Support&Tips thread and I thought it was above the standard of the regular posts. It seems a shame that it got lugged in with the usual one line replies, and in time will disappear completely.

Maybe it could be considered that we have a page where members can submit 'essay-style' posts on magical topics. If someone has an area they are passionate about and would like to write about it in depth without fear of it being skim-read in the middle of a thread then it might be nice to give it the space it deserves.

Maybe there could even be requests from other members who have a particular area they would like to read about. With the wealth of experience and talent on the boards, it might be fascinating to have a few in depth posts where they can share it with everyone else. It could form a great page, full of first class writing and information.

Just an idea!

Mark

It's worth considering. I often despair that quality posts are mostly lost and forgotten in a torrent of crud. Will mull over the idea with t'other Mods.

Sounds like a jolly good idea to me. Would they need vetting for exposure first, though...?

Maybe they'd need vetting generally. Once again to keep the lesser quality entries down. Spamming in the thread would somewhat miss the point of it.

Yup - but we do that for all posts one way or another anyway. On the basis that these essays would be, or are expected to be, 'quality' posts we'd be happy to check them over after posting to make sure all is OK. As always, Mods' decision is final but it would certainly be a pleasant change from ploughing through some of the 'less worthy' posts we get here on occasions :D !

Maybe they should be PM'd to a Mod first to make sure they are of a decent enough quality? It'd be worse if someone posted something that then got removed - might seem a little rude!
That way you can be sure that only the decent entries get posted.

Did anything come of this, only a couple of really interesting posts appeared from people like Craig Browning in the Mentalism vs Mental Magic thread. Just reminded me of the idea....

Just 'mental' would probably be accurate in my case :D ! It's an interesting thought that we were both thinking the same thing and it's no doubt due to our reading the same posts at about the same time thus triggering the thought about the Essay thread. Now that's what I call Mentalism!

Maybe, maybe.

Perhaps you could write an essay on the subject...

I'm glad the Essay page became a real page on the forum - I've actually left my mark forever!

Slightly gutted, however, that after pushing for it I'm not actually able to view it!...
