What trick do you hate the most?

Postby Misanthropy » May 19th, '06, 17:24

For me it has to be any trick where a magicians glamourous assistant gets in a box and the magician compresses it into nothing seemingly crushing her body.

The reason why I hated it is because it seemed fake if you were really being crushed you would scream in pain not smile cheesily at everyone.

Take a look at this website - www.gleasonmagic.com and click on videos then click on "compressed" I laughed so much when I saw this and for good reason as well - 1) her dancing is terrible and 2) she's grinning like a chesire cat when she should at least make it realistic.

I was talking to someone who used to work as a entertainment manager on cruise ships and he sent me the link. We both laughed over it alot cause he said his tricks (including the one above) always went wrong and the screen would come off and reveal her. Those are the type of tricks I hate because they look cheesey and fake.

Hate's a strong word for a Friday afternoon. After all, it's the weekend. So, what's your favourite trick and why?

EDIT: Hmmm.... She looks like a friend of mine.

Nothing wrong with that show. Some great effects there. Stage effects are famous for going wrong at times. It is a lot harder than it looks, you need perfect timing and the mechanics are under strain from constant use. As for the dancing, it is traditional to have some cheesy moves.

If you are looking at her dancing, she is doing her job.

Misdirection comes in many forms.

The only trick I personally DETEST to watch, AND perform, and yet gets asked for so much, simply has to be 'grabbing a coin from behind the kiddies ear'.

I don't quite know why, but it just makes me cringe. Sure, I've done it. We all have at some point. But it's just one of those horrible things you see uncles doing to nephews and then looking really smug!

I love doing that. It stops become amusing when they get to about 5 though. :D

My wife stopped me doing it to our kids though after my 2 year old managed to stick all 4 balls from my mini cups and balls up her nose and we had to go to A&E to get them removed.

Because he is a pretentious little so and so with silly hair who acchieves a lot of his effects by stooges, camera tricks or million dollar gimmicks.

To a layperson he's great. My girlfriend thought he was good.
To a magician, he just comes across as a bit, well, to repeat myself, pretentious.

i have to say that some of his stuff is pretty c*** (not the best) - though others I do enjoy. Sinful was good (though granted, that is wayne's - though we didn't say he had to be the inventor of the trick), and I do like the matrix effect he does - even though it is pretty simple (I had to watch it twice though). I also love his pick-pocketing e.t.c - though i like that no matter who does it so it might just be me...

as for my least favourite trick? It would have to be the one that all grandad's know - you reverse the bottom card of the pack, and get them to put their card in...

*waves hand*

...it is the wrong way round!

Granted, it got me goo reactions when it was the only trick I knew, but I don't very much like it now :P

Love

Chris
