I would like to add a few 'notelets' about this after a fantastic impromtu (yes, totally unprepared) performance at a barbecue this Saturday gone...
I've started carrying my TDB around with me. Why? Because it's compact, fast and effective. What's more, once you've learned it and have the 'basics' down (which are SO simple, and yet perfect), you can literally get a performance out of this device without even thinking twice.
So, back to the barbecue...
Sat there drinking Sol and eating a chicken leg, a mate asked if I'd brought my cards. Which, on this occasion (gasp) I hadn't. However, I WAS set up for TDB.
After a few minutes, I proclaimed "I haven't got my cards, but I can do a card trick with you!" (inspired, I know).
The rest went like this:
1. Got a mate to think (merely think) of a playing card.
2. I rolled up and palmed a napkin
3. I asked him to write the name of the card on a napkin, and roll it into a ball so I couldn't see it.
4. I took the balled-up napkin and tossed it into the barbecue (actually, I did a false transfer and tossed out the blank one I had palmed).
5. In a very dodgy attempt to get a glimpse at the written card, I used my mate's napkin to wipe my face! Glimpse was easy.
6. I took about 20 seconds to sort out the TDB 'blisters'
7. I reached in the barbecue and picked up a tad of ash from the napkin.
8. Yelping, I showed my fingers to be blistered with the prediction
OK... now, let's set some things straight...
1. I do NOT recommend you put your hands into a barbecue. To be honest, it bloody hurt.
2. This effect was TOTALLY impromptu, and I thought it up as I went along
3. The gross misuse of palmings and glimpses (heheheheh) was so obvious to a magician, but there were only laypeople around, so I got away with it.
OK, so this absolutely FLAWED 3 people—2 mates and my older brother.
This, to me, just shows the strength and versatility of the TDB system. A fantastic and flexible addition to any close up performers toolbox, surely?
