I did search before i wrote this, but as usual the rubbish search function didnt work properly. heres my additional review of Holey Sh*t.

The Effect

HOLEY SH*T by Pete Firman and Anthony Owen

The spectator selects a card, this card is slid into the centre of the deck by the spectator. With no fishy moves it rises to the top of the deck. The card is immediately taken away from the deck (no weird or extra flips or moves), the deck is set down out of reach.

"The selected card (shown back and front) is openly placed between two cards with large holes in the centre of each (they too are shown front and back). The selected card is visible through the holes in the outer cards (it REALLY is). Now, with a flick of the fingers the centre card, up until this point still seen through the holes, vanishes. It was there and in a micro second there is air. This really is something to see, it looks like magic…not the fake kind…the real stuff…Oh, you know what I mean! POP! It's gone…fantastic.

"The two outer cards are now taken apart right in front of the spectators eyes and openly showing them, front and back, there is clearly NOTHING in between them. Now…you guessed it…the selection has moved back to the deck, what's more it is the only card that is face up!...

Review
After watching cheeky Pete Firman demonstrating this effect in the promo vid, i knew i had to have it. I am a huge fan of high impact card effects such as this, and since i was totally fooled by the method, i went straight to purchase.

Upon recieving the trick i was pleasantly suprised with the method. Yes it does use gimmicks, and ooohhhhh how sneaky those gimmicks are! everything is very precisely made and of a high quality, my set came in blue backed bikes.

The instruction dvd, shot by TV's Anthony Owen, and presented by monkey man Pete Birman is of a good standard too. First Pete takes you through the history of the effect, carefully crediting everybody who inspired the effect and the method, and takes the time to reccomend some excellent reading materials to further your studies into close-up.

He does a good job teaching the effect, going through the handling, offering variations on the sleights, to suit different skill levels and styles.

so to the trick itself- its good....very good. Once you have got the hang of the slightly knacky handling, i.e the flick vanish, it is a joy to perform. Pete shares his thoughts on misdirection , and these are very useful when performing, people are left with no explanation for what they have just seen. I like the fact that it starts with a small ambitious card trick, which is very nice and works well psychologically, as i think it lowers the spectators expectations "oh its just gonna keep coming to the top- nice"...but then you hit them with the impossible vanish- flick, now you see-now you dont, and the card has reapeared in the center of the deck face up. i have got very good reactions from my first few performances, and i imagine this would make a great start to a full card routine, as you are left totally clean at the end of the effect. im already thinking about trying to integrate this into my little routine with masuda's WOW, but thats another idea altogether.

so in conclusion, dont be afraid of gimmicked cards, when the effect is this strong , and so well structured , you have nothing to worry about. well done Pete & Anthony- excellent trick, very clever indeed!!!

Overall

effect 9/10 i love it, so does everyone i've showed it to
value 9/10 good price for such a strong effect, and everything is well made.

Actually it works fine if you put the right information in. That's how I was able to point you in this direction.

WHAT???

Postby Dr. B.A.Loonatic » Dec 27th, '06, 16:14

First of all, I'm apologizing ahead of time for what I'm sure is either going to be an obvious "Newbie Initiation" type posting, or possibly it might be a phrase common in the UK but not in the States. I have seen it all over this board and can't gather it's meaning from context clues.

What the heck is CUPS?!?!

Again, sorry if it's a stupid question but I'll only ask it once.

I guarantee you'll be suffering from it within in a week - there so much 'must have' stuff mentioned on this forum!

Mods:
Would a CUPS sticky be in order? I spent a while working out what CUPS was - searching the forum shows there hasn't been a thread yet that didn't mention the curse. That includes this one too

Or maybe an general "safe" abbreviations sticky (CUPS, NUMS..)? It could also mention that abbreviations are often used to protect secrets and point out there's no point in asking for definitions on these.

Another Holy Sh*t review

Postby Davebo » Jan 25th, '07, 22:55

Just my view on the reviews really.

Just got this and initially I was disappointed as I thought everything was examinable. However, my initial disappointment subsided when I watched the video and realised that this is an awesome effect and with the right (shown on the DVD) handling is clean enough.

As others have said, the trick ends with a clean deck (almost clean, but the way it ends up is the perfect start to another trick anyway). However, following up with a 'standard' card trick my seem a bit of an anti-climax.

The gaffs are top quality and the method is fiendish.

It has a great 3 step effect with the ACR start, vanish and re-appearance. The misdirection takes the heat off the gaffs and you end up with a straight deck.

I love it.

The quality of the DVD is...different. I like Pete's style and he obviously knows his stuff and shares some nice history, good handlings and tips. The DVD production seems a bit rough though. However, given the quality of the trick , the gaffs and the presentation I have to say it's a winner and would slot into just about any card routine.

Difficulty: 3
The sleights involved just edge it into the 3 bracket, but only just. You can get it down in about half an hour. (It meant I had to learn a riffle force which is useful elsewhere anyway.)
(1=easy to do, 2=No sleights, but not so easy, 3=Some sleights used,
4=Advanced sleights used, 5=Suitable for experienced magicians only)

Cheers.

Okay, thanks to a very kind benefactor on this board, I received this yesterday, and was as impressed as I suspected I would be :)

The effect itself is incredibly snappy (pun fully-indended!), with the disappearence of the selected card being one of the cleanest-looking visual pieces of magic I've seen in years; I've only been performing the final phase in front of a mirror so far, but it really is pant-wettingly amazing when the trapped card vanishes - in full view - in the wink of an eye

The DVD is pretty darn thorough, with Pete covering everything (and one helluva' lot more) that you need to know in order to get the handling down effectively.

Sure, production values aren't at studio-level, but they really don't need to be - this gets the job done very nicely, thank you!

The Gaffed cards that come with the DVD are very nicely-made. However, and without tipping a part of the working, the stuff on the two hole cards seems to have been applied very haphazardly, and I'd have liked to have seen it on the pips-only of the face-applied card. The way it is presently, I can see the face card needing be be handled carefully, to prevent it from becoming 'spoiled'.

The other gaffed pair of cards, on the other hand, are very nicely put togther indeed, and it's difficult to see how they could be improved, really.

If I have one slight critisism, I do worry a little about the general life-span of the hole cards; the holes in them are getting on for an inch in diameter, and this obviously weakens the stock considerably. Add to that the fact that they're being flicked quite hard on each performance, and I suspect they're going to end up quite out of shape before too many months, which may have a detrimental knock-on effect to some of the earlier handling required.

That said, I see that TVmagic are offering replacement gaff-sets (for £10), and I guess putting my own together wouldn't be too much of an issue, really, if it came down to it :?

All-in-all, a very nice effect indeed, and one that I can see I'll be using regularly - 8.5/10

I got a good deal on this effect from www.tvmagic.co.uk. Also picked up Bro Gilbert's Deep 3 and got a free gift. All very reasonable as postage was free too. Honestly, do check out TVmagic, as they have some very good reductions on Holey Sh*t and Deep 3 at the moment. One criticism is that it did take 9 days for order to arrive, but for value for money I can't fault them.

Looking forward to trying the effect.
