Nexus - Kevinparkeproductions.com

Postby Durto » May 26th, '06, 22:36

Hi there, some of you has requested a review of "Nexus", well here it is:

What they say:
Borrow a keychain, a ring, and visually link the ring onto the keychain.

You know how long and how much work it takes to hook a key onto a keyring. But somehow, mysteriously, the magician merely touches a borrowed ring to a borrowed keyring and it is on it. This is Nexus
http://kevinparkerproductions.com/nexus.html
Price:
17.00 Us

Difficulty:
2, some use of misdirection and a bit of manipulation is required, the rest is acting skills

What I say:
Kevin Parker seems to have specialized himself in extremely visual magic effects, and once again he hits with "Nexus". As you can see in the demo video, the effect is very visual, no hiding or whatsoever, the spectator clearly see everything. The method is really simple to learn and you can perform it on 99% of the keyrings you'll rind (you might have some problems to perform it unto girl's keychain, you know those with everything but keys on them ;)). I said that the method was really simple to master, but to present it is another thing. It is not entirely angle proof and the use of misdirection is highly suggested. Thus, another really great effect that can be perform anywhere with any keyrings and rings. The videos itself is present in a decent format (14 minutes) and clearly explains (about 3-4 times!) the effect, the presentation and the how-to.
Have fun!

Highlights:
Highly visual
Gimmickless
Easy to learn

Cons:
Presentation might be a bit hard surrounded

Final Rating:
9/10

Redsixer: Do you think I'm stupid enough to create a review without having bought the product juste for the fun of it?
Go visit Kevin Parker's websit for yourself

I know this is an outdated post (i guess). Just to share an idea with u guys.

If u could master this ring thru keyring thing.. you could even link a keyring onto another keyring too ! 8)

i have to say dont buy this one...
why?
its well overpriced
£20 for a 14 minute dvd that looks like a home movie shot in some teenagers bedroom (no that kind of movie!)
an effect that will be hard to pull of in "the real world " working conditions
no way could this be done surrounded, also the angle the spec has to watch from has to be spot on
i've bought other dvd's for this price with 90 plus minutes of magic and explanations

In the demo Kevin is starting with the key chain in his hand. If it was a full demo, showing him borrowing the key chain; I wouldn't buy this.. And as said before it's very low budget video, way too overpriced.

Kevin's effects do look excellent, but I've not purchased any myself due to the high prices. I can figure out some not-so-brilliant ways of doing most of his tricks, and would pay for his videos if he lowered the price a little.
Nice review though.

The disappointing thing for me was that the promo video on the website was cracking. I thought the trick was perfect for me - something that needs no set-up and uses borrowed props.

But 30 seconds into his full demo on the explanation tape, I was gutted. The move (or more accurately, the moment the move takes place) has been left out of the promo and immediately makes the secret obvious, in my opinion.

I also believe that the poor quality of the videos adds to the amazement factor. I admit I haven't tried this in the real world but that's because it looks so poor when practiced in front of a mirror. And that's without the angle problems.

Overall, I'd be surprised if you get the same reaction from your spectators as Kevin did on the tape.

I know this is reviewed under a different thread but I just bought "Passing Thru" from Kevin and that is awesome. Fair play to the guy - he is a very clever man.

Well, Kevin IS certainly a clever chappie.

However...

Having got a sample of the DVDs from Kevin in to check them out for the shop.

I must say I am glad I vetted them first. In particular, I found Nexus to be a huge letdown, for no other reason than with the three keyrings I had access to, plus a 'feature' of my anatomy prevented me from completing the effect.

I'm just wondering how many other people had the problem.

For this reason, and some other issues with the quality of camerawork vs. cost of DVD, I certainly won't be selling them at NUMS.

However, I encourage you all to make up your own mind, as for sure, Canz, Descent, Revolution, etc. are all quite clever. But I just wonder how practical :(

Seeing as this thread is going OT anyway....

Kevin's effects are a bit of a mixed bag aren't they? Passin Thru - excellent, Descent - excellent (if you're ever near a glass table), Revolution - pretty good, Canz and Nexus - hmm. I haven't got Nexus or Canz as I watched the vids and thought 'that looks good on tape but if it works the way I think it works...' and both times I've discovered I'm right. In time I expect he'll get over the urge to release everything that enters his undoubtedly talented imagination and only release his most solid material. If he does that he'll have beaten Sankey at least.

The artist who does not rise, descends.
