Hummingbird / Hummer Card

Postby rabbit » Jun 9th, '06, 04:38

Hi everybody! I'm new to these forums, the other day I was playin' around on youtube.com and other video sites and found some simple magic tricks that looks really cool like the hummingbird card and some other card tricks, it really sparked my interest and I've already learned alot about cards and a few sneaky little things you can do with them to force a card, etc...

I'm really considering getting into magic, and I figure a hummingbird / hummer card would probably be a good trick to start with... I just have a few questions... I know you guys won't give away how it works, but can I do this "floating" effect with any card? or is it a special card that I need? (not sure if the hummingbird card is just a name for the trick or an actual item), also if the hummingbird card is an item, does it come with a matching set of cards, and can it be placed in a set and shuffled, or is it delicate and can be broken? If it's an item and not just a name, does it have a life expectancy, like will it eventualy stop working?

Any help you can give me will be much appreciated! :D

[edit] Also what does "IT" mean? I keep seeing it used on these forums.

I think it can be done with any card. I am not 100% sure.

The hummingbird card can be done with any card, including a borrowed credit card or id card (drivers license, student card etc). As for IT I'm not sure I can tell you exactly what it is but its a common magicians aid for making things float and move around.

Without giving anything away, pick and choose your moments for best effect.

Watch the trailor vid of 'whose afraid of IT' - see it here ... http://www.penguinmagic.com/product.php?ID=686 and you will see some people like it, some don't. it might have been the camera, it might have been just the place. Who knows.

But I do know that I was with some friends the other night drinking in a pub carpark. As the evening wore on and i had done a few tricks I said 'choose a card' and proceeded to float it. In the semi blackness the effect was wicked with small gasps of amazement. Do this in plain public straight on the out and i am not so sure how effective it is. I think it needs the setup psychologically.

Hummer is great and for the price it is excellent. Its a can't go wrong trick. By that i mean the effect. there is plenty to go wrong as anyone into IT will tell you (can't they make it unbreakable?!!!!)

I would also reccomend getting an ebook on contact mindreading. Its a killer.

there, to magnificant tricks for less than a tenner, what more could you want?

Im surprised no body has said this yet, but you should start out with some basic card books or DVD's such as Royal Road To Card Magic or Born To Perform Card Magic. This will build you a good foundation and you gain the basic knowledge all cardicians should know!

good luck to you :D

I'd agree with that. This isn't a 'first' trick to own as if you just perform this and nothing else then in my opinion the secret will be easily revealed t the specs and you will have wasted your money and blown your credibility as a magician.

It's not really an optical illusion - it just looks like one!

agreed!

Don't know what other people think, but IMO card magic 'moves' form a base for so many other sleights as the handlings make your fingers do unnatural things that you need to make look natural.

It certainly has helped me

Thanks everybody! I'll stick to card/coin tricks for now then, and wait until I get better for tricks like the hummer card... I see what you're saying about how If I preform it wrong people will know what I'm doing, and I wouldn't want them to think I'm just a joke and laugh at me, so I'm gonna go about it the safe (and suggested) way.
