Old "Posts" added to New?

Postby tonykins » Apr 22nd, '03, 18:35

Hi Laurence

Whilst I appreciate the fact that you have given my access to the MO section before I have reached 50 posts on this new site, it would be really nice if the number of posts logged by the members of your old site could be added to the number of posts made on this new site.

There are a few individuals that kept the old site active through what was a pretty quiet period. It would be nice if some of these guys' commitment was shown by adding the number of previous posts to the number already recorded on this new site.

I would imagine there is probably only around 20 "active" individuals from the old site still with you, so hopefully it wouldn't cause too much trouble.

I will however completly understand of this is technically not possible.

... Tony

Hi Tonykins

It has in fact been a nightmare of a task!! I actually thought all was well, until it was pointed out that somebody's posts had been attributed to another. This is why the messages were globally set to "TheOldForum".

I agree that the "Ol' Posters" should receive credit for these posts and I am working on it. Unfortunately, I cannot guarantee I will be successful. If I am not, I will certainly be willing to manually look at 20 users.

Best regards
Laurence

I can appreciate how hard it is, but if you can manage it that would be great.

I've noticed that there have been a few changes recently - we now have only 79 registered members (instead of about 6,000!) and a lot of the older (and more recent) zero posters have been removed.

Tonykins, who started this thread, has been very quiet of late but he was also one of the Old Forum's stalwarts. If you're still out there, Tony, give us a wave!!

It is generally known amongst the regulars here that guys like Nick and Tony have been around for some time - before the lick o'paint and the new system.

People like myself, who were only formally introduced to this forum after it's facelift have to be aware that all those posts marked 'Old Forum' were made by the board's founders (guys like Nick and Tony).

It's a shame that you're names are no longer attributed to your wisdom, but anyone who's bothered to read through any of the Old Forum posts will not find it hard to recognise who posted what.

It's the commitment of you chaps that brought the board to where it is today - so we thank you for it. Without your continued support, there would possibly have not been any incentive to keep the whole thing updated.

Respect.

Thanks, there was a period of about six months towards the end of the Old Forum during which myself and Tony were the only regulars, then in the last few weeks a few of our current members joined. It seems that Tony has gone elsewhere now, which is sad, but he must have his reasons.

To a certain extent we're fortunate that a lot of the old postings are still there - Reviews go back 2 years to May 2001 but I'm guessing that every new review will knock the oldest one off into a black hole somewhere. Many of the old postings now bear the proper names of the contributors so suggest we all crack on with a bit of old post reading, memorise/save anything which is of interest because it won't be there much longer.

It's a shame if Tony isn't around these parts anymore, I spent a lot of time trying to explain the Switch-A-Roo to him in the open forum without giving too much away and it would have been nice to explain things more clearly in the MO section!

I suppose the bottom line here is that change is inevitable - except from a vending machine.

You are all toooooooo kind... I think I'm blushing!

Thanks Mandrake for e-mailing me re. this thread. The truth is I do still visit this site, but alas, if I am entirely honest, my love of all things magical has waned a bit of late. My interest was always purely as an amateur and I loved talking to people who were plainly far more gifted than myself.

I, like many of the original site members, welcomed the updating of this site, although I confess I found that immediately after the update, the massive increase in the number of posts left me a little numb. In the old days (<Creak Creak> of the rocking chair) it was possible to respond to every single posting, but with the new site, I kind of found myself a little swamped.

Having said this, we are of course very lucky to have some very solid contributors (you know who you are, so I wont name names, because I am bound to leave someone out!) that make a bit of "lurking" by the likes us amateurs most interesting.

To cut a short story short, I still visit the site and very much enjoy your postings, but I kind of see myself more on the periphery now.

Thanks once again for your kind words.

Cheers... Tony

Methinks you undervalue your solid contrbutions and inputs, young sir! If it helps, my intital interest was well over 40 years ago and it waxed and waned a few times so perhaps you'll get the urge again one fine day soon?

Anyway, it's very nice to hear from you and to know that you're still alive and kicking (we were all under the assumption you'd been kidnapped by slave traders and were being forced to work as a lap dancer somewhere sleazy and awful. Milton Keynes, or somewhere like that!)

Cheers,

Paul

Tony

I only feel it fair to invite you into the Member's Lounge - you are certainly worthy - and you're 'waning interest' in magic won't be a problem in there!

Just let me know, and I'll press the necessary buttons to let you in... but I'm sure that the other members will agree - you've had a comfy chair (with your own coffee table and mini-bar) reserved from the start...

Just had a quick peep at Derren Brown's Absolute Magic - final sentence on page 18, which is still part of the introduction, seems very appropriate - and I quote thusly:

'I wish you all the best with your magic and hope that you constantly re-discover it.'

Can't put it any better than that!
