i would vote on the number of quality posts but this depends on what you would determine as being a quality post, and again what would the moderators decision be based upon in this option?

I guess a quality post is one that will impart useful knowledge whilst standing alone. General chat/arguments would not be included but something useful, such as an article or useful advice would be.

The moderator (currently me) would take a look at all the posts made by the applicant to decide whether they have a basic knowledge of magic and whether their admission will be useful to other members.

I regularly use a site called "The Motley Fool". It is a financial web site and they have a system where the individuals that use the board can "Recommend" posts to others. If we had enough members (and that clearly isn't the case at the moment) we could use a system like this to promote members to the MO section.

I know it isn't workable at the moment, with the number of members we have, but to use a real "David Brent" Type expression... "I Like thinking out of the box" (as he bites his lower lip and makes a square in the air with his two first fingers).

It would be a real solution to taking the pressure off any Moderators and also enable us to move away from the "50 posts and you're in" system (that I hate so much!).

Having said all of the above, I have to confess I just clicked on "Vote By Members Of Secret Area".

Hi Folks! :D

Personally I favour the tried and tested Local Government method of determining a suitable candidate for access to the MO etc - it involves the swift placement of a brown paper bag full of used tenners in the right hands!

OK, being serious for a moment or two – quantity of posts can indicate either a real commitment and determination or just a compulsive typing disorder. Quality is difficult to assess as my idea of quality may differ from someone else’s ideas. Perhaps the one way to try would be a combination of Moderator involvement but based on approval/recommendations of 2 existing members who have read through 10 or more postings by the applicant. It will be time consuming but we certainly need to maintain the confidentiality of the MO and other restricted areas. How about making it a minimum of 10 'quality' posts plus 10 reviews, formal e-mail application to moderator who can ask two other members to check through the postings and give an opinion?

:o

i agree.. even though it probably means i wont get in..lol although i will say that the agreement from 2 who are already members is kinda masonic and im not sure if im in full agreement with that.... on another forum site there is this sort of idea in the" for sale" bit, where you cant be known as a trusted seller unless you sell an item to a mod or someone already who is a "trusted seller" now the thing with this as i see it, is that most of the people who are "trusted sellers" or mods will have already bought/ traded most of the "newbie" tricks so that this then becomes a closed circle so people are wary about buying from other people in the forum after they see this big stigma about buying from trusted sellers. so i guess what im saying is that the job of deciding who gets access should be of the mods alone (sorry for making your job harder).

p.s bag of tenners is under your top hat... hehe

I share your concerns about the Masonic, closed shop, thinking (which certainly happens elsewhere) and it means we could end up being very bland in our postings – to be on the safe side!

Assuming the moderators are of sufficient status and generally all round good folks – which, of course, they are (see, I’m creeping already!), I guess we’d have to leave it up to them to do all the work!

OTHER

Postby magicguy » Apr 23rd, '03, 10:13

I voted for "OTHER." 8)

I believe that the only way to determine if a person is a real magician is to ask them specific questions and see how they answer them -- like an interview.

I say "like" an interview because it would have to be conducted through e-mails and then I suppose people might be able to falsify, however fewer people would try knowing that it wouldn't be easy.

I know not every magician is knowlegeable in every area of magic but a few questions and answers should make it clear whether a person is a REAL magician or not. I was asked questions (like what tricks do I perform and what sleights do I know) to gain access and I was happy to answer them. What REAL magician would object to that type of thing?

Also, I believe that the access to the secrets should be tough enough not only to keep nosey laymen out but to make the REAL magicians comfortable knowing that their secrets are safe here. Only then will they share the secrets that they have worked so hard for. :(

After all, to learn a sleight and perform it regularly takes alot more work than 50 posts -- the fact that some people already have 50 posts up here in two days is proof of that. I'd like to see someone learn and perform ANY sleight in two days. It just doesn't happen. There is only ONE thing that makes a person a REAL magican and that is PRACTICE. No magician would disagree with that and the REAL magicians who PRACTICE their art will be easy to spot. First, they won't have time to make 50 different posts in two days.

No need to request access. We will proactively be granting access when applicable.

It is a pleasure to be part of this growing forum, and I feel that if I had the access to the quality knowledge and information found here when I was starting out, I'd have probably saved many hours of frustration.

Keep posting, guys. It's quite easy to spot 'leechers' who just want to know how to do things without the skill and learning.
