Phoneomenon

The Effect

Cause any prediction to appear on a stranger’s cell phone.

A random stranger in the crowd is focused on remembering a card when suddenly her cell phone rings. She takes her phone out of her pocket to check who's calling only to see the name of her card staring her in the face.

Price

i got it for £12 from ebay

Ease of use

1-2 ( you are require to force a card and maybe a skill that can put u in jail)

Review

To be honest, I'm a bit disappointed with this dvd. I was hoping to get a 5 star meal but i only got a £5 kebab. At first i hoping that the picture of the card will actually appear on the phone itself, however all this trick does is send a sms to the spectator to reveal the choosen card. The move for this effect is very basic, even i and maybe many of u have thought about it before.

Yes, you are require to force a card and do a little preparation and to be honest I dont think this effect is practical enough to do it to a stranger.

The dvd quality and teaching method is ok. I like the dvd cover very much. Doug went into each section with very detail explanation. The length of the dvd it self is about 30 minutes, and i think this is more that enough for a very basic trick.

However, i have yet to perform this to the public and maybe u need to discount my comments by half  I have only perform this to my wife and she was not impressed by it.

Overall

6/10
would i recommend this dvd? NO

this is the problem with this effect, many people do not understand that this is a performance piece. It is not Calling card and you do need good experience in people management and handling a crowd. It has good potential but you really need to think before you purchase this.

Just courios....... Could u use this in a bad way? Like u sit in the bus or something and passing a lot of "trash" SMS to a stranger sitting next to you, like spam?

Thanks for reviewing, it made me think twice about giving this effect a go. I think instead I will pick up a copy of calling card, I've been thinking about it and I think I figured out how it's done and will be a neat little trick to perform.

Yes you can send a lot of trash sms but as i said earlier, you need a "skill" before u can send the stranger a sms.

I know this is an older thread, but I amd still reading thru alot of these posts here to familarize myself with what has been posted already-as I'm still pretty new to the TM forum.

you said it was a 30 min DVD for a very basic trick.

Curious. Is there just one method to the madness, or does the DVD go into anything else or teach other ways to do this than the just one?

Reason I ask. I've done something similar, but it involves a method that would not require "jail time" as someone has put it. It is a nice effect in my opinion and can be done 2-4 various ways.

I bought that trick, and hated it.
It is also very misleading, as on the cover it says something in the likes of:
"doug McKenzie's long passion for mobile phones and technology lead him to come up with a new method to secretly load information on a stranger's phone." etc etc

I found this misleading as I understood it as: you will learn a method using your phone to load info onto a stranger's phone using bluetooth or another "electronic" system.

I agree that you need some audience management skills, but you need something more, that is not mention AT ALL anywhere.
I find this trick just not feasible without a stooge of some sort. It is a difficult matter I find.
If you expect an easy trick, well, forget about it.
Mine went straight away back to Ebay.

Oh ok, I understood from your 1st post that you liked it, and that we were c*** (not the best) because we couldn't perform it
I was thinking "man, that dude has actually the balls to perform it... Respect!"

So You lost all my respect now! :P

That was when i first had it, i thought that people were not giving it the attention it deserved. So when i got mine i soon noticed that it is the fault of the effect and the method. I only performed it twice and it is just not practical.

It is s***. Let's say it out loud, it is s***.
I tell you what, I have a trick, which has a lot of impact, and it is easy.
First I create a text message saying "your card is the 7 of <>", and save it in my outbox or something.
You just force a card (I use the 7 of diamonds)... then after a while, i just say, "oops, sorry I just got a text message"... some people groan, and that is funny, then, I just open my saved message, say it's for them, and pass the phone over...
It gets great reactions, and it is simple. And you won't go to jail for that.

:D

JTF,
That is similar to the way I used to do it as well. It worked slick. However, I didn't like the fact "I" had to hand them over the phone (touching the phone). and that it was just a text message.

I now do it another way. Where- I tell them, that in most card tricks I do, I can usually guess what card they have selected and present it to them in the end of the trick. I have them then select a card by force and have them place the card back into the deck. I will then allow them to shuffle as I go on to say, Instead, I'm going to contact my fellow brother magicians from all over the world through my mind and we'll see if "they" can reveal the card for me that you selected. (They are probably thinking I'm just going to blurt a card out loud eventually). I ask them to look at the deck and concentrate on their card. As both of my hands are up towards my temples "thinking" (and no where near the phone on my hip... my phone rings with a mystic sounding ringtone....the callers name is XXXmagican. It flashes a camcorder video of the back of a card at first. I will tell them to grab my phone off my hip themselves to see who's calling. On the vid, I show the back of a card at first for time allowance to see 1)let them note who the caller name is and 2) so it's not just their card showing right away. The back of the card from the video is turned over and reveals their card Selection about 3/4 of the way thru. It appears as if XXXmagicians name who is on the phone just showed them their card.

I have had Lots and lots of great reactions with this.

So did you record the video etc? I don't really get how it all happens...
Is that a trick you purchgased or is it something you came up with?

It is something I came up with.

yes, the video is pre-recorded. My phones features include a camera and camcorder.

With either, you can save them as a ring tone or associate it with a name in your contact list
