The Effect

See here for the review request that contains the description.

http://www.talkmagic.co.uk/ftopic11466.php

Cost

Around the £13 mark but as always, depends on where you buy it

Difficulty
(1=easy to do, 2=No sleights, but not so easy, 3=Some sleights used,
4=Advanced sleights used, 5=Suitable for experienced magicians only)

In principle it's a 1 although it rrequires some care, the right materials (widely available) and of course some experimentation before you're ready to perform to others.

Review

I was intrigued when I first read about this effect and came acoss it whilst browsing through a number of other titles.

It's a DVD that's put together well, the teaching is extremely good and the effect is both cunning and grizzly. This WILL have all but the most die hard of your specs squeeming

Obviously this is going to be best performed with other 'geek' type tricks and would look right out of place before and after an ambitious card routine so either pick your other effects carefully or just do it as a sort of 'hit and run' presentation.

If you performed Saw with other 'geeky' effects such as coin in soda can, Third Degree Burn, stigmata etc. then people would be seriously worried about you

There are three other presentations of this effect that are also included and that includes a presentation with a lifesaver (Polo in the UK) where you swallow and then retrieve through the next on the thread. The sleights required are well taught and it adds variety.

I haven't perfected it just yet so I'm waiting before I spring this on an unsuspecting audience

You will get requests to 'DO IT AGAIN' but the performance can't be repeated to the same specs immediatley which I think is a good thing.

Overall

I like it - it's not impromptu but it could be made to look as if it is.

8.5 out of 10

Is the gimmick, R_ C_? Are people able to touch your neck after? Cause the best enviroment I imagine for this is out of the blue after people have had a few drinks, and drunk friends get grabby. (Not to mention, what girl want to hook up with a dude that's all sticky?) Is it uncomfortable or unrealistic to wear for a few hours?

That's a lot of questions. :P

It is what you think it is.

Should be no need for touching but you can give the thread out for examination which is what I think they will want to examine. Afterall, a neck is a nexk

Some girls may like sticky dudes but I'd recommend that you freshen up shortly afterwards

A little old this thread, but I thought I'd add..

The effect is seriously convincing.. but on many occasions I find that I actually saw a little into my neck for real.. I think I get 'caught up in the magic'

But me personally.. I need about 3 days recovery time between performances.. maybe im doing somethign wrong..but if im out with friends or at a party.. and later that night.. the scars on myneck are clearly visible.. I think people start to think ' well now, theres magic, then there's illusion.. then there's just plain stupidity'!! I do kind of fit that bill though.. lol

I think you must be "sawing" too hard, or I've just super tough skin! I go quite lightly - the ideal/visualisation of rubbing fine thread across your throat is enough to make people cringe, then when you do "the move", you can pull your hands back but still keep the pressure minimal - I usually say something like "this last bit... really... stings... quite a lot". The illusion of cutting in deeper is beyond question as you're about to reveal the incision!

I just love this effect. If they ask "is it fake skin?" you just pat it demonstrably (?!) and then let them touch it, but usually I get "does it really hurt?", "I don't like that...", "eeeeurgh" or sometimes "do you have to have a fat neck?"
