Hi people thought I would share this with you, it is from the local newspaper for English people here in Spain, Costa Blanca News

Veteran pea men in Benidorm have promised to try and stop young men and woman from getting involved in the illegal practice in order to eradicate the game form the resort. The game which consists of punters trying to guess under which of three cups or potatoes is the pea, is currently carried out by a group of around 80 gypsies who target unsuspecting tourists.
The council backed by the police have been trying for years to stamp out the practice but have had little success.

A couple of years ago I was in Barcelona and on Las Ramblas there were up to 8 teams doing this scam at various places. Strangely enough, none were Spanish citizens.

It was actually quite amusing to watch them; the whole thing consisted of three matchboxes, three balls of paper and a carpet square plus 4 or 5 in the team, 2 permanently on lookout for the Police. At random times the 'performer' would change places and become the 'punter', variously winning and being 'fooled' by the non appearance of the ball. One of these teams was working right outside the Police Station garage exit so must have been very visible to the Police but they were never challenged. When Police officers were on foot patrol, It was fun to see the lookout guys signal their arrival and the whole team just melted into the crowd in a well rehearsed way. Sheer poetry as long as you weren't tempted to try your luck!
