Review

Well, i only got it at about 9oclock this morning, and have only gone throurgh volume 1, but from just watching volume 1, i can tell you that its brilliant, the teaching from Park Wilson is brilliant, he goes into detail about everything, no stone is left unturned, even the simple things like and overhand shuffle he goes into detail, it recommends that you combine your teaching with the RRTCM book aswell.

He explains in the beginning of the dvd that some stuff has been left out, which is the poor tricks as he says, and only the gem tricks are included, which is very good, so you dont have to skip thorought what you dont want to watch.

The only bad side to the DVD collection is the box itself, paying that sort of price £51 for me, the box is a bit lightweight, i would have expected it to come in a more sturdyer long lasting box, but never mind, still briliant dvds.

I hope this hasnt been reviewed before i tried looking for it and couldnt find it so i thourght i would do one mysefl

Overall

Overall i would give this a 9.5/10

It looses 0.5 becuase of the box, but still it is a quality dvd and although it is expensive, it is fairly priced, and well worth the money, and card magician just starting out, or that wants to get the basics down to a fine art, this is defently one to add to your collection.[/url]

Yeah, this is an excellent companion to the book - and it's about time!
Much, much better than the other, 4-disc, set.

Thanks for the review.

YOU HAVE IT ALL COMPLETELY WRONG!

(The fact that the box isn't good, I think the box is awesome, everything else is spot on though...)

I've had this for a while and have now watched all but about the last twenty minutes of the last DVD. I agree that it's a very good set - and, when compared to the £30 asking price of many single DVDs, it's impressively cheap too.

Wilson not only teaches the moves and tricks from the book well, but several times he also corrects the errors that are in it (though, see http://www.talkmagic.co.uk/ftopic13050.php for my assessment of one particular trick). If I were a vile hound and insisted on finding a niggle, I'd say that the audience reactions to many of the performances are a little, let's say, 'flat'. But then, even with the slight variations, imagine sitting there and having most of the RRTCM performed at you, relentlessly. They were probably plain 'awed out' after a while and could manage nothing more than a bit of a nod. That's being picky, however: this set is a teaching aid, not a show, and, as such, it's excellent.

This is drifting off topic, and really tells us nothing except that I probably have some kind of fissure in my brain, but I find myself very often speculating about members of the audience in instructional magic DVDs/videos. There are some knowns/regulars, of course - Michael Ammar's wife, for example. But there are many others I look at and try to imagine where on earth they came from, how on earth they got to be sitting there, and what in God's name is going on in their heads. Even if they aren't actually worrying, they're frequently intriguing. I mean, take that women with the teeth who always sits on Wilson's left in the RRTCM DVD performances. When asked to run through the numbers of the cards out loud she says, 'deuce,' rather than, 'two.' This, you'd think, indicates someone who's very familiar with cards/card players. Yet she then struggles to name the four suits. Twice. This woman fascinates me.

I'm curious, is it worth purchasing both the book and DVD, or can you benefit from just the DVD?

If the book has mistaken information, and the DVD covers everything on there -- should I be looking into the book as well?

Thanks in advance.

The main reason is that the DVD set costs £60 and the book less than £10...

If price is no object, though, you might prefer the DVD.

Afraid that if you listen to Paul the dvd is only an adjunct to the book, and is set up to be a study guide.

ie you study the book, practice, then fine tune using the DVD.

Bits have been left out for the student to study alone.....so the only true options are book on its own or book and dvd together. Both are a really great way to learn card magic, though if you can afford the book and dvd, another option presents its self!!! Card College For me this would be the perfect way to learn (I cut my teeth on RRTCM and ECT).

So set your budgets and take your choice, (to be fair if you get hooked on cards you will eventually buy them all anyway :D )

Cheers
John

Though Wilson constantly stresses the need to have the book as well, I don't think it's remotely vital. You might miss out on a few things (actually, there are a - very - few tricks on the DVD that a 'performance only' so, to do them yourself, you need either the book, or to figure them out with the power of your brain), but you'd get the bulk of RRTCM. If I had to choose one, and everything else was equal, I'd choose the DVD: it's far better to see a move than to have it described in text (with, perhaps, a few drawings). Not only is it simply easier to understand - we all know that 'easy to show, but a nightmare to write down' thing - but you get view of the 'feel' too.

However, as has been said, the book is so cheap that, if you can afford the DVD, you'd be a dolt not to get the book too. It will provide extra bits and bobs, and it's also much, much easier than the DVD to study in the bath.
