ok, so i need some advice from you guys. How do i make that seemingly enormous transition from doing magic to friends and family to the great british public. I seem to get a little nervous...actually a lot...when i have the opportunity. Any advice gratefully recieved

A good start would be if you know anyone who works for local charities or fundraising groups, offer your services for free, but take plenty of business cards and talk to as many people as possible after your performance if on stage, or during if you're doing closeup. That will give you the confidence you need to work for people you don't know, and may get you a few bookings. Once you are confident enough and have a good working repertoire you can start advertising.

Personally I have just stuck with the first stage as I don't have enough time for lot's of gigs while I'm still at uni, but I do a few shows a year for local church fundraisers and things, anything that is offered to me by people I know.

 happy hunting

when you go out take some small self working tricks like the haunted key and thb tp and silk.
do thease tricks to yourself by way of practice and you will be amased how many kids and parents ask to see some more.

do a little free show most pubs and clubs, resturants ect. dont mind, then give them a card i get a lot of bookings this way.

offer to do magic shows at parties, advertise in shop windows, free parties often result in paid bookings.

children are the hardest audience but thier are lots of clubs and socials crying out for cheep or free shows, any time im out and about and see a family i give them a card, tell them its printed on recyclable paper so it alright to chuck it in the bin, 9 times out of 10 they will keep it.

ask around the local old folks homes, good practice.

in short just get your name out there, people will eventualy seek you out for further bookings, ive doubled my turnover every year since i started doing magic comercialy, which isn't saying much as i started with one booking :?: but people on the street see me and say thats that magic man with the funny key (hey whatever works)
