That's a great tip. The Dover books never seem to have an index, so a searchable version would be brilliant! My copy is marked up like a Christmas tree.

Does anyone have Scarne's Magic Tricks? Might be worth getting that, too.

I have it and, as it costs next to nothing, I'd say it's well worth having. It contains 201 tricks.
1) Some are useless - relying on things that are American, no longer the case, no longer the case even in America, etc.
2) Some are next to useless - relying on clothing or habits that are now very rare.
3) Some are insane - I won't elaborate.
4) A few, frankly, are terrifying - the one that begins, 'The performer shows two empty clay pipes...' has a method that ought to end, 'Be sure to have the number of the local Accident & Emergency department on speed dial.'
5) Some aren't really tricks at all - just origami, etc.
6) Many, many are the old, old tricks you see in every beginner's book/video/DVD ever made.

However, it's nice to have them all there, for reference. And, you'll also get lots of stuff that's very nice indeed. Lots of stuff. There's a Bill to Lemon, for example; I do the Ring on a String all the time - it's a baffler; there's even (if you adapt it a little) a practically impromptu Rising Table (no, your don't use you foot/knee). Basically, I defy you to dip into it for a while and not come away with three or four ideas each time. A fiver well spent, then, I reckon.

I had a look at the card magic book in the Magic Circle library the other night. There is no index, just a contents list of tricks at the beginning, and they seemed to me to be in completely random order - compare, for example, the Encyclopedia of Card Tricks which is at least organised into chapters. I have to say I was completely put off by the lack of any structure. I can see why Tomo could do with a searchable version!

If you are looking to buy this book you can, as was suggested, buy the pdf version from www.lybrary.com for US$12. However, I just ordered mine, "used in good condition", through www.amazon.ca. for C$8.49 (this price includes shipping)-- about US6$.00. www.amazon.co.uk and www.amazon.com have similar prices.

I have quite a lot of pdf books, but there's nothing like curling up on the couch with the real thing in your hands.

Regardless if purchased new or otherwise, this book represents excellent value-for-money and contains many, many card tricks. Granted, not all of them will be to your liking, but I defy any card worker not to find at least a good number of tricks that they will end up using. There is a lot of material in this book and a high proportion of it is quality stuff. At a few pounds/dollars, this is a giveaway.
