Scarne on Card Tricks

Postby mccabe24 » Aug 21st, '06, 05:01

The Effect
This book contains over 150 card tricks that require no sleghts. I bought this book only for a few effects (personally, I really like slights) like the card on the cieling and the card through a hankercheif, but I wound up reading through (and learning) more than half the effects in the book! There are not only your basic "Pick a card" tricks, there are tricks where the decks change coulors. There are effects where a card flies invisibly from one pile to another. There are even a few effects than can be done over the phone! Of coarse, there is still a good pile of "Pick a card" tricks.

Cost
$9.95 USD penguinmagic.com

Difficulty
(1=easy to do, 2=No sleights, but not so easy, 3=Some sleights used,
4=Advanced sleights used, 5=Suitable for experienced magicians only)
Most tricks are 1, but some would be around 2. No sleights are used anywhere in the book.

Review
I know that it sounds like this should be for begginer magicians, but there are effects in here that should be in your routine no matter how good you are. If you are a begginer, this is a great place to start out. You will quickly learn many effects and will be able to create you own effects just from the knowlage in this book. But eventually, you want to buy a book on sleights.

Overall
9/10

Talk about coincidence - I was reading this last night for the first time in quite a while
I'm about half way through it at the mo and I gotta say that there's quite a few tricks in there that I'll prolly be adding to my repertoire.

I'd recommend this book even to the more advanced magi as well - there's prolly something in here for everyone

QUESTION:
If we can sue McDonalds for making us fat and cigarette companies for giving us cancer; why can't we sue Smirnoff for all the ugly gits we've sh*gged ??

Really excellent book. Amazing to watch when perofmed how explained, but remember all of the effects are self working, so throw a couple of sleights in the mix and you have got one hell of a book.

Definately recommend it.

Please consider learning more about John Scarne and the work that he did for the Las Vegas casinos. They have much to thank him for even to this day. My respect for him cannot be measured. I am a craps player. John Scarne is responsible for the set-up and the odds associated with everything on the craps table. I consider myself an extremely learned person when it come to craps and I can assure you that Mr. Scarne can guarantee the casino that no system will guarantee a win at that table at any time. He taught the casinos much relating to catching cheaters. A very talented man.

This book was recommended to me by a very good friend, and an equally good recommendation it was too.

VERY easy to read, and VERY clear pictures!

The cost is minimal compared to a lot of the card books out there.

Well worth owning.

(Thank you for the history Billberman - always nice to know a little background) :D

I've just ordered this from Play.com for £8, delivered. Yet another book to add to my collection. :D

Does anyone have Scarne's Magic Tricks? Might be worth getting that, too.

I saw a vintage copy of this (Scarne on Card Tricks, not the book in the above post) last weekend in a second hand book shop for about £5 It wasn't in great condition and I don't know if it was an original edition but I'm kind of kicking myself for not picking it up.

You never know, if you go back to the shop it may still be on the shelf.

Hi Bicycle808 Yes, I have this.

From memory (can't access my books as I type this), Scarne on Card Tricks is one book, Scarne on Magic Tricks is another, and Scarne on Tricks (or Scarne's Tricks?) is the compilation book which in effect, includes both of the other two books.

I would suggest if you have the choice, the compilation book might be the best option, BUT, I actually purchased my compilation book from ebay at an incredibly good price, and have noticed that they still come up at an equally good price from time to time, so well worth keeping an eye open for any one, if not all of these three Scarne books in my opinion!

Nameless - I hope you went back to the shop in question and found it there! :D

It's a bit of a drive away, so it could be a while before I get back up there. For anyone interested it was at this place:

http://www.barterbooks.co.uk/

It's in Alnwick, Northumberland.

They also had packs of very old (50's) issues of Genii for about £45 - I'm guessing they were packed per year, and a few other magic books of varying ages. They get new stuff in all the time, so if you're looking for something in particular it might be worth seeing if they've got it.

If you like E-books, this and other Scarne books are available cheaply at lybrary.com.
