The real secrets of magic volume 1 by David Stone

Postby Jerome the French » Sep 9th, '06, 10:37

The Effect
This is a DVD, including about 20 tricks and good advice about working in restaurants / coktail parties. Coins / cards / other types
trailer: http://www.alakazam.co.uk/demos/stonesteaser04.wmv

Cost
About £25 on Alakazam, but i think it is a few quids cheaper (~£22) on David Stone's website. It ships to London in 3 days, so that was brill.

Difficulty: 3-4
(1=easy to do, 2=No sleights, but not so easy, 3=Some sleights used,
4=Advanced sleights used, 5=Suitable for experienced magicians only)
The tricks are aimed to the working magicians. Not because of their difficulty, but more because of the nature of these tricks (ie visual and commercial).

Review
David Stone is a French magician, who won loads of prices for his coin magic. He released several DVDs about coins, cigarette, and has been performing all over the world (he speaks English quite well).
This DVD, I must point out is FANTASTICALLY roduced. Special effects, funny clips involving David and some actor, and there are loads of funny clips of David abusing his "audience" as a "what not to do", and it is very funny (see trailer).

The tricks are nothing new, I believe, but there are some nice routines.
Including: various coin across tricks, invisible pass routines, rope tricks, appearing wine bottles, roses etc.
In between each trick, David gives advice in various situations: how to approach a table, where to perform, how to prepare etc etc. I think this is a fantastic DVD for the amateur magician who wants to start performing semi-pro (like me) or professionally.

There are quite a few DVDs around on how to perform in retaurants, bars blah blah blah, but I think this one is very entertaining due to the production, and humour.

To note is the fact that the explanations are silent. The use of view from below, and various special effects make it easy to understand what is happening, but practicing can't be difficult at the same time, as you need to keep your eyes on the screen.
Also, due to that, this DVD is not appropriate for beginners, as the riffle force and various other moves are not well explained; there are show, but without a "vocal" explanantion, they can be difficult to get; but anyway, as you are getting this DVD to start working in restaurants and other coktail parties, it is assume that you are not a total beginner.

Overall 9/10
A top notch DVD, very funny and very well produced. A real pleaure to watch, and very nice (probably not new) routines in there.
Recommended.

Nice review Jerome,

I personally think this is one of the most practical and entertaining magic DVD's for sale at the moment. Some good real world stuff all mixed together with a bit of David's great humour, a fully recommended buy.

I loved it.

I think sponges are great , packs small can play big you learn some fundementals of magic using them. A lot of people see them just for kids. You know image of a magician pulling 1000 out of his pocket or what ever, but used correctly i think they go down well specialy Mr Stones version.

Having said that Eugine Burger has a routine where he produces 32 small balls in some ones hand. Great Dvd Mr Stone great spone routine.

give or take, they're a fair old size anyway and vary in price massively depending on where you pick them up

Get a jumbo silver dollar then! I.D. I think the jumbo coin Stone uses is a 5 inch but I'll re-watch the dvd to be sure (as they say in Ireland), a 5 incher certainly shouldn't be any problem anyway in the context of the routine and definitely that little bit more impresive than a 3 inch.

Insert size related joke here.
