Review
Ok the Frenchman renowned for his basic coin magic DVD’s and cigarette magic is back with this excellent DVD covering rope , coin , card and a few other things but its mainly card magic on here. It is in the vain of Sankey’s “Real work on restaurant and bars” with hints and advice on restaurant and cocktail party magic.
The DVD its self is a high budget DVD with an English and French versions of hints and tips on professional magic. This is as I just said a high budget DVD interlaced with comic shorts when magic goes wrong. Matrix style bullet time camera effects at the end of each trick 19 tricks in all the high lights are a Colour changing deck routine , a one coin routine that is nothing revolutionary but good all the same , Ghost is problem my favourite routine on the DVD where a card is chosen lost in the deck say a King , the top card is showed and not the king the card is then tabled the spec waves there hand over the card. It becomes the king, the king is replaced in the deck a wave of the hand over the deck and only 4 cards are left , the 4 kings!.
This DVD makes all sankeys DVDs look like there was made in a bedroom somewhere with a cheap video camera wait a minute a lot of them are!.
Now for the section on the instructions of the tricks. Its Mr Stone standing in a white room teaching each trick with no vocal, just on screen prompts ala De’vo,
Comparing this to other DVD’s on the market its very good, the explanations need to be a bit better. And maybe David could have been dubbed in to English like his coin DVD’s as his French accent is a bit thick at times. And the magic it self is not nothing new many of the tricks are old or use old principles, David makes no apologies for using other peoples effects. What David adds to these old tricks is a joy to watch and a lot of the tricks will be finding its way in to my act, this is one my favourite magic DVDs of all time and I have about 40 now this and McBride’s art of card manipulation are my favs. By the way on here there is a short close up card manipulation routine.
The bad points , as I said before David’s accent is a bit thick at times and with no vocal to tell you how to do the tricks it sometimes get confusing to see how a slight is done. But apart from that its all good in my opinion.
There is all so a bonus section on the DVD the hilarious “short secrets” film that won the best short magic film at the AOI fest 2006.
Overall
So overall I give this an 8, due to threes nothing amazingly new on the DVD and what’s in the bad points I listed above. But if you want a basic general magic DVD with cards, cigs, coins rope and the ability to produce a glass of whiskey or whatever out of a napkin then get this.
