I'm not very good at this sort of thing, but using and adapting a battery "a la" d'lites would be a cheap and easily obtainable alternative, - but I suppose there would be no money in that for Mr C.

I bought this some time ago, second hand from the TM "Stuff for Sale" forum. I have to agree with Johnny Bravo on this in that the "peek" area is a little small for the size of pad.

That said, a little modification and "old skool" thinking can remedy the slight imperfections in the design.

If you buy some large rectangular post-its and chop them down to the size of the pad area it doesn't look quite so "gimmicky". I tend to stack around 3 or 4 post-its in this way to allay suspicions a little bit. Keeping one post-it permanently affixed under the plastic sleeve helps a little too. If you're so inclined you could colour the cardboard writing surface to match but I've not really found this to be necessary.

To get around the essential placing of the image/word/symbol I hark back to the good old fashioned centre-tear methodology and simple draw a very quick and easy television set and have the spec draw on the screen (to assist them in visualising the design in order for me to read their minds).

My one and only real gripe with this beautiful piece of kit, is that it's not leather.

I HATE PLASTIC PROPS. They remind me of cheap magic sets I used to buy when I was ten.

Can you have anything written on the paper, or does it have to be something on that card?

anything can be written on the post it note, or on the clear plastic surface( do make sure your using a dry wipe pen if you do this though)
Just as long as Its in the right area.

I draw a circle,
and explain that some think The circle represents a crystal ball, but to me, Its more of a target, onto which i can focus my thoughts.

then i ask them to either write a 3,4 or 5 letter word, or write a 3 figure number, or draw a simple drawing. The choice is up to them.

I then ask them to seal the pad with the rubber band. Now at this point, there is an oportunity to do what has to be done simply by making sure that they put the band on the wrong way around.
Doing this, meand that you tell them its incorrect, as you remove the band, and replace it the right way round.

later on, you remind them that they put the band on themselves.... making it hands off.

if this moment is used, you can then get them to put the pad into their pocket. you have done the deed.

But thats not how i do it most of the time.

incidently an earlier post mentions the pad being plastic, rather than leather.. It has to be plastic, as leather is too thick.

I actually finally treated myself tpo one of these at Blackpool this year. I have not so far had the opportunity to use it in anger but I think it is a lovely piece of kit.

I am putting together a few mind reading effects at the moment and this will be an integral part of that.

make sure that what ever method you use, you give them a fine tipped pen.
I found to my cost that if the pen is to thick, because the writing area is small, you can sometimes peek at a blob.
nothing worse than having them open it up, and shout.. " see it's a motorcycle." ( this actually happened)

and remember, if your going to draw what you see rather than say what you see, always draw the circle first, and say..." I'm not sure... but I'm...I'm getting this..... um.. does that look familiar?".. then turn the card over so they see the circle. This Gets a laugh, and breaks the tension.

The Mind Reader Wallet by Magic Makers is much much cheaper AND it is a leather wallet business card holder, so looks less prop like. I write down their word, pretend to get it wrong and leave them a business card for them to turn over at their own leisure and be amazed. I also go round the houses in presentation. The scenic route.

possibly, but..... THIS IS A RIP OFF PRODUCT, AND AS SUCH SHOULD BE AVOIDED AT ALL COSTS.

As i've put in my other posts, I prefer the Mind Reader Wallet but the Thought Transmitter has more power, combined it is far superior than either is on their own. Having said that I use a First Impressions Pad for my mental routines nowadays.

This piece of great kit is with me for all walk around gigs. Yes there are some issues already outlined here, but nothing that a skilled performer will not get around. Its great, I use it for numerous effects. Its not suitable for my stage work so I use a different system, but I find its perfect for Walkaround as it fits in a pocket and..to laymen..its appearence is very innocent.

Back in the day I would draw a tv on the card/post it note, whatever and explain that the tv is my thought transmitter all they have to do is put whatever they are thinking in the tv and blah blah blah. its a great little gimmick.
