What a brilliant question!

OK... An ID - £7...

OR... NFW - about £12

OR... Triple Impact by Alakazam - about £12

BUT...

Personally, being a bit of a card-freak, I'd recommend a deck of Bicycle Cards, plus a copy of the Royal Road to Card Magic.

Will only cost £10 - and will absolutely blow the competition away as far as value for money goes - so you'll have £10 left to get the ID as well!

Or just buy a regular deck and a can of roughing spray???

A bit DIY, but you can renew the roughing next time they get smooth...

Just a thought!

20 quid and a magic newbie -

TT, deck of bikes, royal road or expert card technique and a copy of 'magic' magazine (or similiar)

knowledge is all in magic, read, read, read then read some more.
you'd be surprised how many libraries sometimes have interesting books, and if you're near a major library, you're sorted.

IMO, the RRTCM and Bobo's modern coin magic are must buys - assuming you want card trick and coin manipulations, however if you are looking for ready made magic, my favourites would definitely include.

1. The ID
2. At least one Mirage deck (same as a svengali - but allows the cards to be fanned out easier)
3. A stripper/wizard deck (although I am sure I will change that to a tappered deck - once mine arrives (thanks seige)).
4. Pena Coin. (This is so cheap - and also the one trick that completely and utterly baffles everyone) (well not the one trick - the ID also impresses immensely).

I'm not sure how much Ive spent yet - but you could do a pretty good show with just these items...

Depending on your skill level... Try getting 2 tricks for £20!!

Personally I'd go for the 3 card monte and NFW... Both excellant tricks (but not the easiest to pull off) with superb kicker endings!!
