Would you agree with the Member's Lounge idea?

Yes. Sounds great. It will keep the main forum magic-only.

Perhaps, but isn't that defeating the object of a magic forum?

No. This forum is for magicians, not a general chat-site.

No. I'm already fed up of the non-magic talk in here clouding the forums.

Members' Lounge???

Postby seige » Jun 6th, '03, 10:37

OK, I know I'm guilty of the crime outlined below, which is why I'm about to make a suggestion...

It would seem that, due to crossovers and similarities in personalities, a few members find it irresistable to chat in a general sense, rather than all about Magic.

The same members also talk EXTENSIVELY about magic, but these non-magic banter-marathons may be misplaced in the Magic threads.

I therefore suggest that a 'Lounge' be created - which is an entirely different area. Membership to the Lounge would be granted possibly by invitation, and would be an additional Usergroup to the two in current operation.

The forum I previously managed (which was a forum for web designers) went the same way, and the Lounge was a more intimate and personal place where non-forum related conversation could happen.

This kept the main forum pages clean, primarily, but also added another twist to the site - a kind of personality.

I've set up a poll for this thread, and please DO make a vote if you're reading this.

Cheers,
Seige

Sounds like a good idea, I don't generally get involved in the non-magical chat as I am a shy person with nothing to say (friends looking over shoulder snigger) but if there were somewhere such as a lounge I might be tempted to be more sociable and turn up with a bottle and large bag of Kettle chips (with dip) to engage in polite but irrelevant conversation!

 guilty so hang me

a lounge sounds like a good idea, perhaps you could have a link at the bottom like pm email etc.
then you could say meet me in the lounge

trouble is if we are all in the lounge whos left to give advice to newbies :?:

personaly i like a black coffee loads of sugar and a almond finger, I'm a bit old before my time

could be intereting we already have a cat (mog) and a castle attacking ladder (siege engine), and i know someone to do the disco's

technically a seige engine would be a cat(mog??)apult or ballistae etc... not a ladder... however a lengthy debate/heated arguement leading up to a massive conflict could be called a seige... hehe

It should be noted that the Lounge is being hailed as a good idea.

It should also be noted that since I posted this idea, the community seems to have grown even stronger - making a lounge an even better idea.

The regulars on this forum even now quite often involve themselves in almost 'live chat's' - taking place at unearthly hours of the day.
I think it's a brilliant way to gain trust - as it's an honour to serve fellow magi once you know it's not all one-sided.

By the way... mine's the Parker Knoll with the electronic recline and reading lamp, OK???

Yes the lounge would be a most welcome addition.

Having not been able to attend magic clubs due to family commitments and obsessive wife I welcome the sense of community that it will bring.

To give us a chance to talk about life in general to other like minded people. Especially those like me who don't have a 'normal' working lifestyle, and find it hard to understand why on a Thursday morning (ok 12:30pm is morning for me!) there is no-one around to chat to.

My question is would the lounge be a live chatroom, or just another forum?

Valentino

Well knock me sideways, as if by magic  the lounge appears. OK I didn't look closely enough.

How does one get access to it though?

Valentino

The easy answer is that one waits to be invited in. That may sound a bit precious but it was a feature which took a bit of setting up so invites are only issued as and when the members are in agreement to invite new folks. Bear with it for a while - all things are possible and may come to pass!
