Close up coin magic – coins across routine
Difficulty: 2 out of 5 ( some sleights used, but ever so basic )
Effect
The magician places 4 coins side by side on the table. He then pulls them to 4 seperate parts of the mat. he points to the 2 coins at the front. he strikes his hands forward and with a magical gesture, one of the coins jumps across to the other hand. He then drags one of the back coins forward, lifts his hands up to show 2 coins on one side and the one he has under his left hand. He drops his hands on the coins, immediately lifting them as they land to show the single coin has joined the other two. to finish off he brings the fourth coin forward and and a magical wave, the 3 coins that were gathered under the right hand have now joined the one single coins left under the left hand!!

Shadow Coins has been a favorite among magicians for years. Now Daniel Garcia has released his chink-a-chink routine that uses only 4 coins and includes:
- A Standard Shadow Coin Routine
- A Backfire Ending
- A Flash Four Appearance
- No Extras
- No Gimmicks
- No Shells
I say:
This is an exceptionally well taught DVD. Daniel Garcia is a great creator of effects and he is also a good teacher too. He goes slowly, covering every detail. He does repeat a lot of the material an awful lot at first I can honestly say this is helpful as you learn the fist phase, and then practice this, then move on to the second phase, in which the first stage is ran through again, and it goes on like this. The routine itself goes quite fast so you need a really good breakdown of these moves, which is exactly what you get
The moves are really easy. There is some basic sleight of hand, but its so beautifully deceptive its undetectable. Don’t get me wrong, this will take some practice. You need to have your hands in the right places at just the right times and this may take some getting used to. It took me a couple of hours practice to get the handling down.
This is quite angle sensitive in theory. You really need to have people stand ( or sit ) pretty much in front of you. Saying that, in the ‘real world’ this proves no problem. I put it to the test today in our morning meeting at work. I asked everyone to gather round and I put a small table in front of me. I lay 4 coins onto the centre of my close up mat that I keep at work. Everyone naturally gathered in closer in front of me. You see, who would watch a coin routine standing at your side? There is no view from there. You just have to be aware of your angles, not necessarily physically control them.
There are a number of routines. You can go from Shade to any of the above mentioned routines, as you are repeating the trick with the same or similar climax, but using kind of a different method to get there, which we all know is the best thing to do when repeating an effect. My favourite is shade into backfire ending, it’s a cool effect and they expect the same ending but you hit them with an alternate!
I read somewhere that you really need a close up mat. You don’t, you just need a surface. The floor, table or anywhere that is basically flat and smooth. If you hear chink noises or table noises or coins talking at anytime they’re not supposed to, you’re not doing it right. Sufficient patter will eliminate this anyway.
Overall:
My first review, the firs coins across routine that I have put into practice and I think this is one of the most visual out there! Easy to do.. takes a little practice but doesn’t every trick need practice? Daniel Garcia is one of my favourite acts right now along with Jay Sankey ( I have been roped in now and love what the guy does ). Plus one of the coolest moments in this routine is when they ‘chink-a-chink’ together and the audience knows that piece of magic is done, then you just lift your hands. I love the fact it uses no gimmicks. Just pure unadulterated sleight of hand, confidence and bare front

9 out of 10 simply due to the sensitivity of angles but as mentioned, no real problem here.
