Not really - the ball is made of rubber for a start, and if you watch it again you'll notice the point of dropping it was to mis-direct the guard, who ends up locked in one of Borden's leg irons.

I love this film so much, it's actually what really started my interest in performing magic. The sleight of hand performed by Bale is simple, subtle, but totally convincing and made me think: 'woa...I'd love to be able to vanish a card like that!" So there you go.

A few points of interest at the first post:

I laughed when he said Christian Bale's accent was convincing. A natural accent generally is very convincing, and his put on american accent in his american films seems to be even more so! :)

I imagined that there would be a few people out there upset about the reveals in the movie. (Don't forget the bullet catch, which would have been great to do to a modern audience with a modern clip gun or revolver instead.) But as the first poster said, to a modern audience to stay interested there needed to be a few reveals in there.

Awesome film and love the Tesla bits (and not just 'cos that's also the name of a rockin' band from the USA).

The panning shot over all the top hats is a cinema classic moment...

By the way, does anyone know where I can get a large top hat on the cheap?

Yes - thanks for the suggestions! Everyone should have a top hat.

This was probally one of my favourite films at one time (Until I watched 21), the plot is very clever and concise and I did end up buying the dvd as I enjoyed it so much.

Superbly directed - although Caine stole the show for me.

A little bit of trivia too; as both are very methodist in their acting technique, Michael Weber actually came in to teach some of the rope's to Bale and Jackman, along with other cast members I'm sure.

If you haven't read the book, I urge you to. *So* much better than the film.

Bringing Down the House -is- a brilliant book. But we digress!

I watched The Prestige twice in theatres and many more times on DVD. I actually think it might be one of the greatest depictions of obsession ever put to film.

And The Illusionist has just been on and we have Saturday night magic shows again recently. Is it just me, or is there an upsurge of interest in all things magical recently?
