Despite the fact that my friend and I each guessed one half of the twist way before the reveal, we still both thoroughly enjoyed the film.
Also, I noticed that nobody mentioned Mr. Bowie's understated performance as Nikola Tesla, so I will - there.
Oh, and if you enjoyed the Prestige I imagine you would also get a kick out The Illusionist, starring Edward Norton.
Another movie with a magickal as well as magical theme is the cult b-movie Lord of Illusions, based on the eponymous Clive Barker novel. I'm really not a Clive Barker fan, but the theme of LOI was more than enough to keep me glued. That and Famke Jensen

It's a shame both films screened at the same time, as the Prestige certainly stole the Illusionist's thunder.
The illusionist is a very different film however and it revolves around a romantic entaglement between low born Eisenheim, the greatest illusionist to walk the earth (or is he?) and high born Sophie, betrothed of the Crown Prince of Vienna.
The film boasts some extemely well turned out performances and a twist that should keep most people guessing until the last 10 minutes.
For those to whom a "romantic" plot line doesn't appeal, dispair not. While central to the storyline, the romance is by no means the crux. Eisenheim is a great performer, perhaps too great, and the audience in the film (and those watching the film) must certainly ask themselves; "Is that real magic?"

I loved "The Illusionist" and hated "The Prestige". "The Prestige" was far too clever for my liking and most of it went over my head. And the plot just confused the hell out of me, whilst I found "The Illusionist" enchanting and magical.
Has anyone seen "The Brothers Grimm"? I thought that was a fun film on a magical theme that would interest magicians.

Aah and NOW I understand what CUPS is!

In all honesty I really didn't like the bros Grimm. I found the performances to be awkward; Damon and co appeared almost embarrassed to be playing the roles - almost like first time actors in a pantomime or something.
Normally I'd but that down to bad direction but it's a Terry Gilliam film - TERRY GILLIAM! I'm a huge fan of Mr. Gilliam's films but TBG was a huge disappointment for me, the aesthetic was there, but that was about it. :(

Enjoyed both movies but preferred the Illusionist. Both films reminded me of "camera tricks". I know that sounds foolish because they are films and there were many camera effects. I found the Prestige a little easier to follow and the conclusion of the film gave us a lot of food for thought. The Illusionist was a bit more difficult to follow due to the similarity of a number of the performers. I'm sure that that was the idea of the entire film but as Vernon once said "confusion isn't art". Just one man's opinion.

True. It reminded me of when Armageddon and Deep Impact came out...obviously, Armageddon won out on that one.

In terms of the movies at hand, I think both the Prestige and Illusionist were enjoyable movies. The Prestige felt at times like it was trying too hard, and the Illusionist dragged for me at points, but both were well done, and (in my humble opinion) worth seeing.

I really enjoyed The Prestige, especially as I am a fan of Christian Bale. But I preferred The Illusionist - what a beautiful film.
