Check Mate

Effect

You show two poker chips - one white coloured centre and the other with a black centre. Place on in the left hand and one in the right. You close both hands into fists, making passing movements with the two hands, and on opening both hands it is seen that the chips have transposed. the hands are then closed and the chips transpose again, returning to their staring positions.
Onlookers by this time have sumised that both chips are white on one side and black on the other: but when you place one chip on the other all sides become checkered black and white chips.

£25 from International Magic

Difficulty
(1=easy to do, 2=No sleights, but not so easy, 3=Some sleights used,
4=Advanced sleights used, 5=Suitable for experienced magicians only)

This is a 1 most probably as it pretty much does it all for you. A few minutes working on the handling and your off.

Review

I bought this due to me having to have some material for a James Bond Casino night in a few weeks so needed something easy and this suited the bill perfectly.
For people out there who have similar gimmicked tricks then there will be no surprises on how this is done but still very effective with laymen.
What I personally like about this is when performing the black to white transpo your spectator immediately twigs on that maybe the chips are black on one side and white on the other. It is this that makes that makes this so successful as an effect. When your audience beleive they are ahead of you and think they've caught you out this kicker really takes them by surprise.
As far as the build quality goes this is an Eddie Gibson product so it is excellently produced and the instructions are very concise and easy to understand.
As far as being examinable I was at first a bit sceptical but have handed this out to a few and no one has come across the secret as of yet. I would however if using this would go on to another effect quickly and retrieve the chips.
As stated I feel this isn't an effect strong enough as a opener or a closer but is perfect for a quick mid routine trick which also gives you an opportunity to put the cards away, do the chips and then maybe deck switch (that's what I'll be doing).
It is expensive for one effect but will be something that I will personally use alot as a quick interim effect within a close up routine so for me it is well worth the money for something which is easy to perform, is made very well and gets good reactions.

Overall

8/10 Very Nice. I like. Yes?

seems to be a reworking of black and white surprise (Davenports).
If so, and well made (being gibson, they should be good quality), a very nice visual effect.

not a fan of sigs, so I won't bother adding o..... oh

Looks pretty nice.
As I'm totally clueless about the original trick as well (total newbie here), are they examinable before and after ?

Not examinable before but are afterwards. I find that rarely things are wanted for examination before a trick .

If you are new to magic though I wouldn't necessarily get this as there are books or Dvds for this price or cheaper with far more effects for your buck. This is still a great little trick but is one effect for 25 notes.

Thank you very much.
I'm waiting for a 100 pound order of books, dvds and decks to arrive :

(2nd post here : http://www.talkmagic.co.uk/ftopic14797-15.php )

and I will start studying as soon as they arrive. But there seems to be a CUPS outbreak and I'm thinking of the next purchases

I have this trick and love it even though it is very short.
Would also like to add that it is not an easy set up for you table hoppers.

But I totaly agree with greedoniz comments above.

i would slightly disagree. If you carry around the gimmick that aids the reset the you can be ready to go again in 30 seconds. Yes you will have to make sure you are not seen but isn't that always the case with most tricks that need a reset.
You are correct with it being a quick trick but with a bit of patter and playing around with the audience can and does extend this.
