Review section expansion

Postby Mage Tyler » Nov 27th, '06, 05:28

One problem I run into often is that I don't buy many magic DVDs or tricks, I typically stick to books. Partially due to budget, but also since I'm somewhat new it gives me a good overview as I decide what avenues of magic to pursue.

Without any naming conventions, and especially for someone new like myself, the "reviews" board becomes a rather convoluted place since I'm not familiar with the majority of effect names or new DVDs coming out.

For this reason I would propose, request, or otherwise encourage the Reviews section being broken down further into "Multimedia - DVD/VHS/video”, "Books/pamphlets/periodicals", and finally "Effects - packaged tricks”. Although I'm sure there are some snappier names that could be used.

Many thanks for your time, any and all comments are certainly welcomed.

It would certainly be useful to at least mention in the title of the review what type of item the review is about. This would also require very little effort in terms of rearranging the forum.

Yes. I quite like the idea of having Book, DVD, eBook, at the front of the Review title.

It gets a little bit trickier (npi) when catagoriesing a trick though - so maybe just a Trick: prefix?

But then you have different genres as well, so do you do a double prefix? and what about author?

ie,

CHILDRENS, DVD: Child'sPlay by Bill Abbot
MENTALISM, BOOK:13 Steps to Mentalism by Corinda

Also what would come first genre of media?

On the whole though I think it is a good idea although it may make the titles quite long. We used to do a similar thing of course in the reviews index, but that just proved too much work to keep up to date.

Of course if we did comply to a Review Title formatted as above then maybe we could qrite a script to automatically create a review index?

I think it's a good idea.... maybe genre can be the first item in the actual review with the media format being the only thing added to the title...

For instance BOOK: 13 steps by corinda

and then in the review
GENRE

The Effect

Cost

Difficulty
(1=easy to do, 2=No sleights, but not so easy, 3=Some sleights used,
4=Advanced sleights used, 5=Suitable for experienced magicians only)

Review

I'm sure we considered a separate section for Book Reviews a while ago but came across blurred lines about whether downloads were books or not. Perhaps we could work on the basis that if something is in written form, either on paper or electronically transmitted, then it's a 'Book'. DVDs and Videos which include no props etc could also be separate and then prop based stuff with or without DVD/Video/Text can be in a third section?

3 sections are probably enough otherwise it'll start to resemble the Magic Cafe  !

It's worth trying but only if people remember to use the right sections otherwise the Mods will be forever editing and moving stuff all over the place like we had to do with the old Magican Talk section.

Why not just put the media type in brackets after the review title?

Such as:

Corinda's 13 Steps to Mentalism (book)

and

Jay Sankey's 1999 (DVD)

and

NFW! By Gary Freed (trick)

or

Bicycle Masters Deck (utility)

Basically, 'book', 'DVD', 'Trick' and 'Utility'.

Books and DVDs are fairly obvious, with e-books fitting the 'Book' listing, as would a compilation PDF etc.

'Trick' would describe anything which was a one-trick effect, such as NFW, Colour Monte, The Web, Floating Card etc.

'Utility' could describe anything which is an accessory or element, such as Cards, Sponge balls, 'Black Widow', the Raven etc.

Surely there's not many more categories or additions!

And by just adding it in brackets after the title, surely we don't need to change a thing!

I think seperate sections would be better for people wanting to browse though, as a lot of peeps don't tend to use Ctrl + f
