Stars of magic Vol: 1: Paul Harris (DVD-ified tapes 1-3)

The Effect
I love the Art of Astonishment sets, but the reading and matching instructions to my finger position became a pain. Then I found this...

The first three volumes of Stars of Magic- Paul Harris. It has a slightly misleading trick list since it labels "Solid Deception" and "Elevator card trick" as two separate effects when they are actually the same.

" VOL 1

* Super Swindle
* Bizarre Vanish
* Sidewinder
* Ultimate Ripoff
* Mickey Mouse Math
* Wack Your Pack
* Las Vegas Leaper
* Solid Deception
* Elevator Card Trick
* Bizarre Twist
* Overkill

VOL 2

* Bush Whacker
* Seductive Switch
* Strange Exchange
* Hi-Ho Silver!
* Ballerina Cards (Las Vegas Split)
* Interlaced Vanish
* Reset
* Limo Service
* Screenplay

VOL 3

* Flash Fold
* Vanishing Deck
* Open Revelation
* Mondo Nifty Invisible Palm Aces
* Sticky Fingers
* Vacuum Cleaner Cards
* Immaculate Connection
* MONSTER COIN ROUTINE
* Twilight
* Color Stunner
* Blue Tatoo
* The Uncut Version
* TV Magic Card

Running Time Approximately 208 min"

"Oh happy day" - PH book 1

Cost About 18-19 dollars (not including SandH)

Difficulty
(1=easy to do, 2=No sleights, but not so easy, 3=Some sleights used,
4=Advanced sleights used, 5=Suitable for experienced magicians only)

Ranges from 3-4
Most of the tricks have ingeniously clever, yet simple sleights (Ballerina Cards (A.K.A. Las Vegas split), Ultimate Rip-off, Mondo Nifty Inv. Palm Aces, for example.) Others will require a bit of practice to get the knack just right. (One hand top palm from Strange Exchange, Simple Switch, Immaculate Connection).

Review

This is fantastic! This DVD consists of the first three Paul Harris tapes. The layout isn't perfect, but the contents (IMO) make up for it. The first section of the DVD shows PH performing for four people in front of a camera. Just seeing him perform was enough to make me happy that I bought this. He does a trick or a series of tricks, then explains the method(s). His explanations are not as thorough as they could be, but most people, I think, can manage with what he gives. The only "effect" that isn't explained thoroughly enough would be the short "Simple Switch" sequence between "Solid Deception" and "Bizarre Twist".

The second section isn't as well explained as the first. Still, everything is learnable. This section contains what might be one of PH's most famous effect. Reset. It also has many related effects (4 jacks 4 aces). How neat is that? The last effects on this and the third section are somewhat useless(IMO). They involve a special video section, but I just can't see myself using them.

The third section has a huge amount of incredible effects. The monster coin routine is worth the price of this DVD. OK, maybe that's a bit of an exaggeration, but still, this is amazing. His patter isn't for everyone thought, since it's about how a real man does magic.

The section also contains the most youtubed PH effect (possibly tieing with cros twist, but I'm not sure)- Invisible Palm Aces. (I know, I know, it wasn't originally his concept, but his handling is the most used one).

Immaculate Connection is fun to watch. I watched the explanation, but I'm not into ruining my cards left and right, so I don't use it. For those people who need more than the explanation available in the Art of Astonishment book (2), this is a great source. Like I said above, even if you don't use it, the Immaculate connection is fun.

Overall 9.5/10
I'd say this is a give away at this price. It's a good way to get an idea of Paul Harris type tricks for those of you who aren't quite up to paying some big bucks for Art of Astonishment (alright, the bucks aren't that big considering the vast amount of effects, but still..).

P.S. I can finally do the simple switch!!! :D not as good as PH though.

Would you stay this complements the books or could be used as a direct replacement? I like books, but really do understand what you mean by matching descriptions to fingers.

It can be used as a direct replacement for the tricks it contains. It contains some of the lengthier[sp?] tricks so it makes the handling easier to understand IMO.
