Nice review. I brought one a few years ago which prompted me to make my own version which i find better. I brought one of the "battered" bicycle decks and cut a very small strip of the bottom on all the reds. It Works on the same principle but the patter goes something like "i brought two decks of cards and took the blacks out and put them together so i have one deck full of blacks. What i did then is put one red somewhere in the deck. Lets see if you can find it." I then fan the cards out (whoever said you couldn't is a buffoon) and suprise suprise, they get it right.

So, going back to a previous post, which shops allow you to specify the value of the 'svengalied' card? I'd like to buy several decks with the same card...

Papa, i think you'd have to contact each shop...

and Spyder, Imagine a deck that you can perform all your Svengali needs with, but you can start the routine be casually(ie no real technique needed) fanning the cards, both ways, showing them to be different, even ribboning them hand to hand...

The key card is always the nine of hearts in the cheap oriental decks that abound all over the place.

strangely, I have never had a three of hearts in either a Svengali or a Mirage deck, my 1st deck was a three of clubs, and I have had about 3 more 'three of clubs' all from Marvin(well i started somewhere, didn't I??) the Bike ones i'v gone though have all been different. Its Just pot luck, i suppose. I presume the companies the 'gaff' the deck, just use regular 808 decks, but lots of them, and alternate which card is used for each deck.

After reading this thread, I can hardly wait for my Svengali deck to arrive in the mail! I ordered it because I saw it mentioned a lot on various magic boards and I have no idea exactly what it actually does. Guess I'll find out today or tomorrow-it's scheduled to arrive soon.
I did, however, take the precaution of ordering a book on how to use it!

Actually my very first deck I bought was a svengali. I started off as a ventriloquist, but I wanted to do more. So I combined it with Magic.

Actually I never really used the full potential of the svengali, I was young, unexperienced. I used it only for forcing a card and to simple card trick.

I still own this deck and some others. I no longer use it to force a card, fortunately I've mastered a few methods with my normal deck.

The only problem I have with Svengali nowadays, is that you cann't hand it out to the audience, so this deck can only be used with certain audiences.

This is the problem nowadays with audiences, they always want to check your deck of cards.

As a designer, I've never been asked by a client if they can check my tools. And I'd say a ventriloquist wouldn't be asked to 'show me the dummy'.

But, unfortunately, in magic, our tools are under observation.

Spectator management keeps what's yours YOURS. Sure, they may suspect foul play, but even then, don't leave a situation open where the deck is up for scrutiny.

That's true, they never asks me that. However, we don't use dummies, we have partners :P

That's great... I love the 1995 clip with your whole 'Doug Henning' look!

Funny Bunny is the real star though, of course ;)
