I am sure Mandrake posted on this book earlier, however i cannot find the review. I would just like to add these comments. It is a FANTASTIC book and great value for money. When I get time I will post further comments.

Many thanks to Mandrake for taking the time out ot goto the Local Garden Centre and get me a copy.

I did post a sort of review but it was part of a response in the MO section so here it is again!

The book in question is called The Art of Magic and Sleight of Hand by Nicholas Einhorn, produced by Anness Publishing, also mentioned are Selectabook Ltd and Select Editions. Publishing date is 2003. The list of contents would take ages to pass on but the chapter headings are:

Introduction (good place to put it - right at the start!)
History of Mystery
Card Magic - includes some Grips, Cuts, Shuffles and Passes plus Tricks
Dinner Table Magic (nothing to do with making the actual table disappear!)
Match Magic
String Cord & Rope Magic
Mind Magic
Silk, Thimble & Paper Magic
Money Magic - including clips, palms and vanishes

There are full colour photos throughout with very clear instructions showing how to build your own props, gaffs etc. The section on card passes and flourishes may not be new to everyone but all are well explained. Many tricks shown have been seen on sale commercially at well over a tenner a throw and will cost you only a fraction of that to make.

The author is previous Young Magician of The Year and has an excellent website extolling his talents and virtues and he looks nothing like the Masked Magician so he must be OK.

NB: The earlier version of this review contained an offer to sell my spare copy - it was sold within minutes of that posting so have deleted it. If you see this book on sale anywhere at less than a tenner it's worth the investment!

I shouldda bought more - but they only had those 2 copies left! I'll scout around and see if there are any other copies available as it's a real bargain at that price. It would also mean I get to visit the various Garden Centre Restaurants and consume Chocolate Cake and Cappuccinos galore!

It was the first magic book I bought.......I thought it was good but to be honest I haven't even had time to browse at it again....I'm too busy working through the Card magic of Le Paul and Dai Vernons Inner Card Trilogy...YIKES!!! (well.....yikes for me anyway)

Well that's four of us who are in possession of Nick's secrets - we could almost start a fan club. Nick is also the resident Magician at Spurs so we could always ask if there are any freebie seats available! (Doesn't matter which team - if any- you support, a freebie is a freebie!).

Hhhmmm, I didn't know football clubs had resident magicians. Apart from Uri gellar of course - but he claims he isn't a magician doesn't he?

Well anyway, they (spurs) really do need to pull something out of the hat next season, and I'm not sure a rabbit would be enough...arf arf :lol:

And talking of "The Art of Magic and Sleight of Hand" (which I wasn't, but does it really matter! sheesh), It is a real gem, and must be the bargain book of the year at £4.99. I admit there is a lot of stuff I've seen elsewhere, but there is also alot I haven't and the photographs and text are extremely good quality.

Maybe our illustrious host could find out from the Garden centre how they got it so cheap, and supply it on his webshop - he would make a killing.

Thanks for that Mandrake, that was interesting reading. It seems Mr. gellar doesn't like being caught out.

It's funny isn't it that because he claimed he was doing everything with pyschic powers - he can be considered a cheat and a fraudster - whereas if he had just claimed himself as being a magician in the first place, being caught out could have just been a magician who needs a bit more practice...

Yet Derren Brown can progress from being a self confessed (!) magician to a mentalist/psychological/hypnotic performer of wonders etc.

Perhaps the difference is that Derren Brown doesn't make outlandish claims, he just lets his performances do all the speaking.

I saw Uri at the Memorabilia Exhibition last year at the NEC and he had his car on display which was covered with (as in literally covered by sticking them on with Araldite or something!) bent cutlery and photos of the great stars who donated the items. I can still recall that TV performance where he went back to magic with the ice cube melting/water boiling/clock ticking forwards and backwards thing and it was average, very, very average! Oh well, at least we're still talking about him!

now i dont know if this is the same book under a different name but you can buy the "practical encyclopedia of magic " by Nicholas Einhorn from Bargain books for about a fiver.

includes magic with cards, matches, rope, silk, thimbles and money.
Reveals the secrets of over 120 magic tricks with over 1000 colour photographs

to be honest for a fiver you could do much worse than buy this, it is a very informative book for a beginner and coupled with say "the cyclopedia of magic" by Mark Wilson (£8ish from amazon) should give most people some new ideas to think about

10/10 for both books

Mog's right as usual - I've just seen The Encyclopedia of Magic by Nicholas Einhorn at The Works for £4.99, it's exactly the same book and the printing history confirms the earlier name. If you have a fiver to spare, go get the book and you'll possess all the secrets know so far only a select few (thousand) people!

Worth every penny!

And now it's back in The Works in paperback, under the original name, and still a penny less than a fiver. If you see it and wonder whether to get it, don't hesitate, get a copy sharpish and you'll find a lot of effects over a wide range of magic. At this price, and this printing history, there can't be many copies left out there - so don't miss out!
