CoinOne by Homer Liwag - 10/10 (does anyone else own this?!)

Postby Atomo » Jan 17th, '07, 17:40

The Effect
CoinOne is Homer Liwags underground coins across routine. It first appeared in the extremly rare publication ' Magic Man Examiner'. It is highly visual, and exremely deceptive. The DVD also contains a Chris Kenners impromptu coins across routine 'The Deep'.

go to www.homerliwag.com for video and details

Cost
with shipping, it cost me about 23 quid, converted from dollars.

Difficulty
(1=easy to do, 2=No sleights, but not so easy, 3=Some sleights used,
4=Advanced sleights used, 5=Suitable for experienced magicians only)

honestly, although im temtped to say 3, i will have to say 4. The sleights used are fairly advanced, and will be new to alot of people i suspect. But it within most peoples reach, provided you put in the hours.

Review

The second i opened the airmale box i knew this was something special. Inside i found i a silver/grey anti static bag containing the dvd. The bag was sealed with a yellow label which read ' ATTENTION ! contents MAGIC sensitive!'. This is my type of trick i thought to myself, this guys got style. The DVD itself is immaculatly boxed and comes with a signed certificate from Homer Liwag, thanking you for the purchase, and letting you know that the dvd is limited edition, mine is 950 of 2500.

So, before i go into detail about the trick itself, i have to compliment Homer for producing the best packaging i've ever seen on a magic DVD. It made me feel like i was holding something special...and indeed i was.
The DVD itself is flawlessly produced, cool menu screens, custom soundtrack, perfect lighting and camera work. top notch, 10/10 production values. My excitement by the time i got to the performance section was ridiculous. I was not dissapointed, i ordered this on the strength of the teaser trailer, the full routine in action is a joy to behold, it is what coin magic should look like- REAL MAGIC! With palms held open, the coins jump one at a time frome left to right, no funny moves, the just dissapear from one hand and appear in the other. The third coin is the coolest, you say "ok watch, this one in slow motion" then you throw it to the right hand,"did you see it go?" they think your kidding, but when you open you hands nothing has changed, still 2 in each hand!!! you smile and say "it hasn't happened yet" then bam! with hands open travels invisably across in the blink of an eye. The finale is great too, With the final coin dissapearing from your fingertips, joining the others in a stack on the table, or in the spectators hands. At the end of the routine all coins are examinable.

The teaching is done in the style made popular by De'Vo, i.e close ups of the hands from both the performers and audience point of view, with written captions appearing to tell you what you neen to know about each step of the handling. The more difficult sleights are given their own section and taught in detail. This is the perfect format for teaching this trick, it is made clear as crystal, and is great for pausing, as you can look at the hands, and read the intstructions. occasionally things are made even more clear with illustrations, its great, and you will not be left with any questions.

so...whats the catch? well, CoinOne does require a gimmick, this gimmick is not included with the DVD. However, anyone with more than a passing interested in coin magic will already own this, and they are not to expensive to buy online if you dont. It is advised that you start out practicing this routine with half dollar sized coins, i am using 2 pound coins, and it works a treat. If you need to ask what the gimmick is, then i would probably say that your not ready to learn this routine, not trying to sound cool, but it is not really for begginers.

The sleights are taught really well, and i especially like the bits of finesse he teaches for the 'melt away vanish'. Also included are two alternate handlings for the end of the routine, which leave all four coins in the spectators hands. AND !!!! Chris Kenner teaches his awesome ungimmicked coins across routine ' The Deep' , This is really a great bonus, because if you show someone CoinOne they will almost definatly want to see it again, and with this routine your always ready, just 4 coins needed! ( and for anyone who already own Kenners 'Out of Control' book, the handling taught here seems to have some new moves added- its got better!)

Once leanrt and practiced properly this routine is strong enough to go out and build a reputation with, no one will have a clue, and it will probably be enough to convince some people that genuinly have coin related super powers.

well i feel like i've been typing for quite a while now, so time for me to say what you all expcted

10/10 PERFECT. THIS IS WHAT MAGIC SHOULD LOOK LIKE.

Atomo out

Anyone else have this dvd? id love to hear some opinions, and performance feedback. Im still in the practice stage, but its coming along nicely and i think next weekend it'll be up to scratch.

edit : Im suprised at the lack of interest in this trick, personally i am totally fascinated by anything that the magic trinity from the Illusions resturant (Kenner, Liwag, Close) have to offer, and given that this is Homer Liwags first release i thought it would cause a stir. come on people ! let me know your thoughts

Thank you very much Atomo for alerting me to this. I've been looking at Silver Dream for a while and thinking 'Hmm, it's quite expensive for what it is, maybe I'll get it if I find something to fit with it' and tada! here that thing is. Nice review, I'll order these sometime soon and get some feedback up.

no worries Bronze, you wont be dissapointed. CoinOne has gotta be one of the coolest things i've ever bought, very very clever stuff from one of David Copperfields crew. It wont be around forever so id suggest making an order soon, it wont dissapoint.

This is a fantastic routine, and fantastic production quality on the video. There are a bit a angles for parts of the routine, but it is well worth working those out and performing this for people.

Highly recommended.

Nice review Atomo, I have actually already ordered this and after reading your review I really am now going to suffer waiting for it, I hate waiting

Like yourself I am a bit of a coin freak and this looks amazing, the demo looks so good you would think it was a camera trick.

What sort of delivery time is there for this? And do you have a good source for the gimmick. I have found ordinary ones but not ex****ed

hey, just thought id mention that you can get really cheap ex*****d sh***s from magicbox.uk.com, i've just been practicing the routine with 2p's using a sh*** that i got from that site. Im actuall finding it alot easier with the 2p's that with the 2 pound coins i had been using previously, i think it is because they are thinner it makes the sleights involved that little bit easier to pull off. I like how ordinary they look too, it contrasts well with the eye popping routine.

The delivery time on this was really good, i think mine took about a week to arrive, which isn't bad from the states.

Has anyone got this up to scratch yet and performed it? I've giving myself a few weeks to master it before i show to anyone, its one of those tricks that cant be rushed.

You only need the one item or so I'm told. When I first saw the trailer thought there were two involved but I was wrong, as usual. I was in Alakazam yesterday and asked them on the off chance if they stocked it. They didn't, as it's exclusive from him, but it's always worth asking in there. Anyway, I ended up getting Cultural Xchange 2 instead and I think there's plenty on there to keep me busy for quite some time so unfortunately CoinOne has taken a step back down the list for a while.
