Butter Coin

Postby vats » Aug 7th, '03, 13:15

I've lifted this from 'magictricks.co.uk'..... sounds amazing! Although I'd be interested in how many of the following moves can be performed with a bit of application of Mr Bobos book?
COIN MELT/RESTORE
3 COIN FLIGHT SERIES
THE SELF-SELECTING COIN
SIGNED COIN THROUGH TABLE
IMPROVED BITE AND RESTORE COIN
SIGNED COIN MELTS THROUGH GLASS TABLE

Anyway, review below

Butter Coin - 10p version + DVD

Price : £19.99

Effect :
Imagine taking a SIGNED coin from a spectator and, before their eyes, you drop it onto a glass table. Suddenly, to their amazement, the signed coin is clearly seen to melt through the glass and fall into your awaiting hand that is under the table!

Or imagine -- without any awkward or cumbersome moves -- having the ability to OPENLY make three coins jump from one hand to the other, one by one, all while the coins are in plain sight and the hands are opened!

Well imagine no more because, with the world’s most versatile coin, the 10p ButterCoin, you can perform these incredible feats of magic, and much more!

Description :
If you love performing coin magic and you love trick coins, then this is the coin for you! ButterCoin was designed to allow the magician to perform an array of stunning illusions with great ease, and without all of the difficult moves that is inherent of high-level magic. ButterCoin, alone, is used to perform all of the illusions that once required three utility coins!

That’s right! This coin performs all of the moves that once required the following trick coins: Flipper Coin, Rub Away Coin, and the Folding Coin!!! And it performs these moves more easily and more effectively. This is truly the coin of the future. ButterCoin -- Magic So Visual...It’s Shocking!

Alex Lourido, the creator of the popular “Osmosis” illusion, has done it again! ButterCoin is a professionally shot DVD, complete with multiple camera angles and lots of crisp close ups. In this DVD you will be taught the following six illusions:

COIN MELT/RESTORE
3 COIN FLIGHT SERIES
THE SELF-SELECTING COIN
SIGNED COIN THROUGH TABLE
IMPROVED BITE AND RESTORE COIN
SIGNED COIN MELTS THROUGH GLASS TABLE
Very highly recommended, and remember, the UK version of this is available exclusively from MagicTricks.co.uk.

I don't have this, but I was talking to somebody on Monday night that has the 10p version, and to be perfectly honest he wasn't that impressed.

He said that the craftsmanship of the 10p coin wasn't great and that it was too small. He also mentioned that it is almost identical to another trick he has - with US coins (I think a half dollar, but can't be sure) and that the original US version is much better.

For the life of me I can't remember the actual "other" trick though, but I will try to find out of you like.

Dear oh dear!

This effect looks awful! With the right arsenal of moves from Bobo's and Roth, most of the effects are easily attainable either WITHOUT the coin, or with a standard flipper.

If anyone has been tempted to go for this and buy it, please let us know - I'd be interested to hear also.

well thats saved me a few quid!
sometimes you read a 'review' and think wow only to send off your hard earned cash to think 'sh*t' when it arrives.
I'll invest my cash in some books instead of this one.
cheers

Buttercoin

Postby roman59 » Aug 8th, '03, 11:49

Hi All
Yes I was talking to Bananafish about this on monday night!
Its worth buying buttercoin to get the dvd included with it, in my opinion the ten pence coin is to small (thats uk currency for you).
Buttercoin is similar to an effect from JB Magic called Freefall, freefall uses the same type of gimmicked coin but it is produced in a US half dollar which is a lot more visible to the spectators & a lot more easier to handle, I picked this up on tuesday of this week - it really does cut the mustard.
If you do coin effects with half dollars this is really an essiential purchase at £15.00 its perfect for coins across, coins through table, bitten coin & rub a dub vanish!
The next time I see banafish I wil show it to him.
If you want to see a demo of freefall check out www.jbtv.co.uk
Hope this helps
Cheers All :D

Brilliant - some people interested in Coins! And half-dollars to boot!

Great advice. Half dollars are definately the magicians choice for coin magic. Gimmicked 10p's are a little difficult to work with.

There are 50p versions of some effects (bite-out, folding) which helps, but you can't beat a half dollar.

As far as gimmicked coins go, most of the effects you're looking at here are attainable with just regular coins...

To take your magic to the next level, may I suggest the excellent ' Revolutionary Coin Magic' video by Jay Sankey.

His 'Mr Clean Coins Across' routine is simply a killer - three coins travel from one hand to the other - no gimmicks - just sleights. There's also a much more convincing coin through table routine - which eliminates the prerequisite of a glass top table... the coins vanish and appear visually and audibly - even a coin appearing UP through the table.

Sorry, but I'm a bit of a purist when it comes to magic... I like things to be reasonably examinable - and in my honest opinion, aside from a copper-silver coin, there's not a lot of need to go for gimmicks when doing these kinds of effect.

Please ask for any more info...

Seige
I know what you mean about Sankey I had the pleasure of meeting him in May this year he had me in stiches.
Do you use a shell at all?
If you do Mint Condition is really worth checking out, its a Johnson expanded half dollar that can be shown both sides, perfect for coins across.
Cheers

Yes, I use shells occasionally... I've also seen the 'double sided' shells too - not my bag.

But after the Sankey vid, you won't need to use ANY gimmicks for your coins across.

I agree the best place to start with coin magic is a good book (Bobos) and after that a dvd or two. So far I have "The Complete Introduction to Coin Magic" (Ammar) and I also have Sankey's 45 which is littered with some really great coin maigic - with no gimmicks.

However, in saying that I certainly wouldn't dismiss using gimmicked coins. I was shown the chinese bit last week (thanks again roman59) and admired the simplicity and cleanliness of the routine. It also ends up being examinable before and after the routine which is pretty good going considering.

I also on occaision use coin uniques/folding coins - although I must admit that the more I watch/read and practice the dvds/books the less inclined I am to get them out - but I certainly wouldn't knock them totally. They have their place, and they certainly got me interested in learning more about "real" coin magic. so that can't be a bad thing.

After reading mixed reviews on this item, I decided to go ahead and purchase it. What can I say, other than - BUY THIS NOW!!!

The quality of the coin I received is very good. Whilst I wouldn't feel confident about freely showing the tails side, the cut on the heads side is barely visible, even though I know where to look. Your average spectator would not be able to see this.

The instructional DVD is presented in a light-hearted way, and the effects very good.

I'm not sure if there was a problem with the first load of these, but based on what I've seen, and other feedback at magictricks.co.uk, the quality of these is in the most-part excellent.

As others have already mentioned, the Buttercoin construction is nowhere near as convincing as its US counterpart! it's still a cool (easy-to-do) trick, but i've been busted a few times by eagle-eyed punters!

the heads side is definately much better than the tails!

the issue is that because a 10p is so small, you need to have people very close in, and then the coin is easily perusable....

oh well - it gives you an excuse to polish up your misdirection skills...

i recieved the butter coin 10p version from nem and can see straight away why nem did not like it, first the dvd is all american butter half.
the palms shown are excelent and help me a lot but half of then cant be done with the ten pence version add to the fact that the ten version is backwards, which meens you cant even do the butter move and you will need a microscope to see it.

had i bought this from a regular site they would get such a flameing for selling a dvd that dos'nt come close to explaining how to use the tenpence version and for blatent false advertising, i have no problem with nem as the dvd has given me a few ideas to polish my palming so was worth the price.

my advice go for the half version dont touch the 10p with a barge pole, let it stay an exclusive item on the shelf were it belongs.

can anyone direct me to were i can get the half version and some halfs please, thanks MagicDiscoMan.

The Musketeer coin from emagictricks.co.uk is made in uk 50p format.
It can be used as a replacment for butter or used with the very nice effects that come with it and at nearly 1/2 the price .
The coin is perfect the biggest problem is finding it when with other coins.
