Ellusionist: How to do Street Magic

Postby CumQuaT » Feb 26th, '07, 12:29

Hi all. I'm surprised this hasn't been reviewed yet. I apologize if it already has been, but I had a quick look and couldn't find it.

This DVD from ellusionist, while pricey, is quite worth it. Here's what ellusionist have to say about it:

"I'm not talking about "pick a card" tricks you learned when you were a kid. I'm talking about the magic that took the big TV star magicians weeks, months, and even years to discover.

You can achieve the illusions people WANT to see. No cutting ladies in half, no flashy lights, no boxes or fakey looking "props". This is in-your-face magic. "The stuff" that made the top magicians who they are today.

It's so easy to learn! I have been practicing and honing this incredible art for 25 years now, and I promise you that after watching 'The Video', you will be able to perform incredible tricks the same day."

Here's what I have to say about it:

"How to do Street Magic" is probably, I'd say, 60% good, 40% average. Alot of the average tricks on there require substantial preparation or can only be done under very specific circumstances, which sort of runs contradictory to the whole "Street Magic" ethos.
The 60% that IS good, however, is REALLY good. Top notch stuff that you will be able to do again and again. Some of it is relatively simple, some of it is mind-bendingly hard and will take you about a hundred practices before you get it right. Not all of the DVD is about tricks, also. It shows you how to do special flourishes. Coin rolls, card flipping, card swapping, etc.
I would recommend it, but just know you'll have to wade through a little bit of junk to get to the good stuff.

Two of the tricks it does teach you though (while quite hard) are worth the entire price of the DVD just for those two tricks. Absolutely incredible.

Hopefully this has been a good thorough review for you guys to glean from. You can check out more info on the DVD on ellusionist's site:

40% good and 60% average. It's onbly personal preference though

The ''spam'' on the ellusionist website really sometimes disturbs me. I call it spam anyway.

Like:
''How to be SO totally MAGIC!! Within MINUTES of learning this material YOU WILL be the COOLEST GUY EVER!!''

or:
''This MAGIC is SO IMPOSSIBLE!!!!! You will LITERALLY FREEZE YOUR AUDIENCE from pure excitement''

Just my opinion. :)

At least you've given an honest review, 60-70% hype is about normal for E.

Yeah I tend to shy away from ellusion because of all the hype and I find their products more expensive than other sites for the same thing.

I'm not saying I'd avoid E completely as I actually like to watch the demos because I think they're funny to watch. With all the- get ready to be amazed, feel the power, you can be this amazing after two minutes of watching this DVD, it will change your life etc

But fair play to the guy, he has done well for himself

Can anybody please help me? I'm having terrible problems controlling my streetmagic- I can't walk down a street without turning into a pub.

Hahaha very well said guys. Yes, I do agree that alot of Ellusionist's products are overpriced and their hyping of their products goes well beyond reason sometimes, but at the same time, if you wade through all the hype they have a few core very good starting blocks for newer magicians, and even a few new techniques for the more seasoned practitioner. Brad Christian is one of my favourite magicians, as I find his techniques to be very well presented.

But yeah, it's usually an unbalanced ratio of good to bad. But when there's good with Ellusionist, it's really good. (And yeah... When there's bad, it's really bad hahaha)

Everyone loves to diss E, with good reason. Unfortunately there's a decent amount of classic stuff on this dvd (salt shaker through table being a good example) and the production values are good. Any newcomer to magic would come away with a firm grasp of some basic principles and a nice array of effects to dazzle and confound, it's such a pity that anyone in their right mind would be put off by the breathless Daily Mail style stream of utter poppycock they use to advertise it.

The artist who does not rise, descends.

I started on Ellusionist and I think Im better off. I bought the entire ellusionist bundle..

I worked through.. got a good grasp as make up aside.. Brad is a good teacher for BEGINNERS.

Ok.. so I moved onto Bobo and Jean Hugard and realised I knew NOTHING in comparison but I had a good solid ground to build on. To be honest I may not have got things from RRTCM without the videos.

I big up Card College anyway... everything knows that

Salt shaker through table is good.. coin from sugar packet.. sponge ball routine.. table through glass.. ring through string.. some good classics in there

I'm working my way through Royal Road at the minute but am wondering would this DVD be good as a change from cards now and then.

What ya's think? Would it be worth my while to bite the bullet and order myself a copy?

Can anybody please help me? I'm having terrible problems controlling my streetmagic- I can't walk down a street without turning into a pub.

I slept on it and to be honest I'm happy with my cards and TT at the minute. Was gonna have a flutter with coins but don't wanna take on too much at once.

I was just beginning to think that I was maybe missing out on something. I suppose Ellusionist is very good at doing that.

Thanks for the advice anyways

Born To Perform is fantastic, I got it about a week ago and today I did the Two Card Monte trick at school for a couple of people, completely freaked them out! I prefer it to RRTCM because I find it easier learning from DVDs rather than books. Check out the reviews on penguinmagic.com for Born To Perform, 370 people can't be wrong. :P
