Saw by Sean Fields

I was extremely excited to receive this, after watching Gambit's video of it, I knew I just had to have this in my DVD player. So it arrives at my house, and I'm jumping for joy, and I prance to my room in a girlish manner. My mom and little sister looked at me like I had four heads. I dove onto my bed and ripped off the plastic, I then opened up the case and plopped the DVD into my PS2.

After getting through the FBI warning and the Danger page, the menu came on screen. To be honest, at first, it seemed a little confusing, but after staring at it for a good ten seconds, everything seems to make sense. The menu looks like everything is scattered all around, but in reality it is perfectly disorganized. It's disorganized in such a way, that it's organized. So I select the option SAW encased in a black box to watch the original version of SAW. I'm sitting there in awe at how realistic this looks. I honestly jumped up for joy, because this was the kind of bizarre effect I was looking for, and I now had it.

The basic effect of SAW is pure genious, the way it works is just so genious that it makes you want to cry. It literally looks like you are sawing it in and out of your neck, it's just so beautifully disgusting. I couldn't wait to saw a thread into my own neck.

After watching the basic routine, I moved onto Choke, which is a brilliant, you swallow a lifesaver, and rip it out of your throat, pure genious. Choke will require more practice than all of the other versions of SAW because it requires a sleight, a very minor sleight, but it must be done correctly to look as though you are ripping it out of your throat.

After Choke, I watched Suture, which is a disgusting way of pulling the thread out of one of the holes the thread made. I tried this one out in the mirror, and it just makes your stomach crawl up to your throat, yes, it's THAT disgusting.

I then watched Trachea, which is for those people who want to learn something along the lines of what Criss Angel did when he swallowed the thread and pulled it out of his stomach. Well, this is almost the same thing, but instead of pulling it out of your stomach, it visually comes out of your throat, pure vile genious.

The thing I like about Sean Fields is his teaching, it's so laid back, he doesn't spend twenty minutes delving into one aspect that you barely need to know, he just gets straight the point, and straight out of it, but does it in a way that it sinks in to the bone. You understand everything you need to do without watching the DVD a second time, thanks for your teaching Sean. He also teaches which thread to use, how long the thread needs to be, how not to hurt your skin, and so much more.

Bonus: The bonus on the SAW DVD is kind of hidden. It's not a blatent flashy sign screaming, LOOK OVER HERE, IT'S A BONUS, but you'll know when you see it. Sean teaches a nice quick opener to SAW that allows the performer to rip a thread from the back of his neck to the front. It's quite nice, and I can see myself using it before SAW.

All in all, I would recommend this to anyone looking to expand their repetoire and get away from the whole "regular" side of magic.

Great effect Sean, I love it!

Nice rwview but i believe that a review for this has already been done. There is a search function at the top of the page that is always handy to check if a review has already been done on the product

Isn't it better to get different opinions?

This is very true. Usually you can just post your review in the same thread as the original so that people can read many peoples opinions and decide whether they are going to purchase it.

Yes, I agree, thanks for that! SAW is a really cool trick and I feel you really get your money's worth with the dvd. It's not just one trick, it's a whole bunch of tricks. I still haven't been able to find the stuff you need to do it, so I use an alternative which isn't as good...

Simple answer- there is a "gimmick" used.

If you want more detail, buy it.

No, you learn to ACTUALLY pull a string through your neck and then pull it out without bleeding. Some doctors are using this 'Saw' method in certain operations so the patient doesn't loose any blood!

Saw

Postby Gary Dickson » Jun 2nd, '07, 10:26

Hello everyone,

I trust you are all well. I've recently started busking with magic in Nottingham (if you see me give me lots of ten pound notes, please!). I wanted to buy an effect that would startle people, so I bought Saw by Sean Fields.

First off, the DVD. The packaging is in black and white and has a somewhat attractive homemade feel to it. As mitchellstaffij indicated the menu system is initially confusing, the style being similar to the cover. I wont describe the effects themselves as that has been done.

What you get is bare bones. A performance of each effect and the teaching. Sean's style is very low key, which I found attractive, but the
instruction is slim. Don't expect any indepth teaching. I have to say, it is probably not needed. The effect is simple to perform and can be set up in a matter of seconds.

I road tested Saw on the poor people of Nottingham last night. Here are my thoughts.

First of all, there are exposure risks when performing this in daylight. I was performing at around 8pm and it was still quite light. Somebody saw how the effect was done (no pun intended!). Admittedly, the fault may have been my own during the set up (those who own the DVD will know what I mean). So, be careful performing this in daylight. When night fell, however.......oh, such sweetness! People flipped out. They could not believe what they were seeing. I had posturing, teenage lads (affectionately known as chavs in the uk) screaming and wincing. By the end of the night this effect had become one of my favourites. In terms of immediate audience reaction this effect even outclasses Sinful, which gets a very strong reaction.

The great thing about this effect is that it works from any angle. People can be right up to your neck and they see the thread inside the flesh. It takes seconds to set up and it just uses thread which you can take right off the reel! (I love tricks that use everyday objects. Sinful is a favourite of mine for that reason).

Another bonus to this effect is that it wins over those people who think they know magic. The ones who say "I know all the tricks", or "I can show you one".

A word of warning. Caught in a wave of enthusiasm for the effect I performed it about 15 times throughout the night. Foolish, I know, but I couldn't get over the reactions it was getting. By the end of the night my neck was quite sore (or should that be saw).

Should you buy this? It depends. It is definitely not suitable for children. Aside from the shock effect they might take it into their tiny little heads to try it themselves and there are safety issues to consider. It is great to perform to groups of teenagers and especially groups of men who think they're hard! Perform Saw and see them crumble before your eyes.

I would only buy this effect if you really want to shock people. But if you do like shocking people (as I do) go and buy this effect. Buy it now, you will not regret it.

Right, that's my tuppence worth. See you all on the funny farm.
All the best
Gary

addendum

Postby Gary Dickson » Jun 10th, '07, 18:24

Hello everyone,

hope you're all well.

Just thought I'd post some further thoughts on saw now that I've had a chance to play with it a bit.

Difficulty: 1

I didn't say how difficult the effect is. It's really easy! A child could do it.

The issue around people seeing the effect was down to my inexperience, I think. I have performed this effect in daylight with no problems since.

Now that I've had a chance to work on the performance (wincing in pain, playing with the thread in the neck, etc) it is much more polished. It gets really strong reactions from people. What is great is that they can come right up to your neck to look. Also, the finish is clean. There is no indication of how the trick works.

Once again, I would have to say, if you like people to scream when you do magic (and who doesn't!) buy this effect. Go and buy it now. In fact, go and buy it just so that we can all give Sean Fields lots of money. He deserves it! Right, I'm off to buy Explicit Content, now!
