The Review

Daryl is known as the Magicians Magician – and now I can see why. Basically this DVD contains just about every thing there is to know about the 3 Card Monte. Many (if not all) of the variations are shown, and all the moves and gimmicks that have ever been associated with the routine are explained and taught in Daryl’s very easy to understand style. It is both extremely entertaining and very informative. This is my first Daryl DVD – and I love this guy. I will definitely be looking to buy more of his DVD’s.

The DVD lasts approximately 2 and a half hours. It alternates between the performance the many routines to a room full of people, and Daryl showing the techniques for the routines in a very clear, step by step manner.

Daryl also gives credit where credit is due to the other magicians who have made some of the moves/routines famous.

Details of the contents are as follows.

Work Surfaces.

The best type of Cards to use and how to prepare them.

The standard “moves”

Other “moves” This includes classics such as the Flustration Count, Rhumba Count, DL (for small packets), The Glide and the “Mexican Turnover Top Change Second Deal”, which is really a great little move.

Routines. This includes The Dai Vernon routine and Stewart Judah’s routine.

Variations. This includes some of the many variations. It includes the 7 Card Monte (fantastic), and even the Colour Monte (already reviewed as a stand alone trick).

Variations with Gimmicks.

Difficulty. 1-3/5
1=Even I can do it, 2=No sleights, but not so easy, 3=Some sleights used,
4=Advanced sleights used, 5=Suitable for experienced magicians only)

There are definitely sleights involved – and so far I have only watched the DVD once (I am waiting for an order of Bee cards to practice with) – but none of the sleights seem that difficult.

Rating. Effect/item: 10/10, Quality of goods: 10/10, Value for money: 10/10

Bottom Line.
WOW! Daryl is an excellent teacher but most importantly this DVD is just so entertaining. It is very impressive watching someone do the 3 Card Monte routines so well. It is like watching a well choreographed ballet.

What you get with this DVD is all you need to perform not just a few tricks, but many many routines. I have already purchased separately a few of the routines that were shown in this DVD, and I now wish I had saved my money and just bought this DVD first. Daryl is not only funny and a very competent performer, he is also a very good teacher of magic (IMHO).

I can’t begin to tell you enough how good this is. I admit it will take a fair amount of practice to get it all smooth – especially with the patter at the same time – but then after all it is a hobby.

I can’t stress too much how much I enjoyed this DVD. To be honest, I would have enjoyed watching just the performance without the tuition.

If you want to impress peopel with a well scripted magic routine - then look no further for inspiration.

Like Michael Ammar, Daryl is a natural teacher. Great presentational skills and personality make this DVD a joy to watch - hey, you even learn how to do a cool card trick along the way... :D

I'm more into coins than cards, but I do love the "scams" and "classics" (three shell game, cups and balls) and so decided the the Three Card Monte should be in my repertoire. Without a doubt, this is the best way to learn it.

Love this DVD, there was so much more to the 3 card monte than i knew, plus the way Dayrl's routine of the 3 card monte was different to my old routine and i feel Dayrl's routine is a lot easier and less suspicious. I finally learnt Dai Vernon's routine and that really cut it for me!

This is a DVD that is a must buy if you are interested in the 3 card monte

That's a nice review. Another one for the old wish list, then. (I have long since given up the fight against CUPS as I am simply too weak).

By the way, the DVD is available from Penguin Magic for about £20, including airmail despatch (if you can wait 2-3 weeks for it!)

Incidentally, why isn't this review in the Electronic Media Format forum? Just curious.

Because it was reviewed 4 years ago, and that room didn't exist back then.

Just for you though, I will move it... :)

After reading the review, I ordered it and have just finished watching it. It is a VERY complete dvd covering SOOOOOO much of the 3 Monte technique. At first I couldn't imagine 2 hours and a half on one effect, but Daryl really is very precise! It will take a lot of practice, but thanks to Daryl I really know where I should start. Thanks bananafish for the review!
