Connected - Peter Harrison

Postby LeftEye » Apr 16th, '07, 21:47

The Effect
This trick is actually DESIGNED as a closer and my God does it make a good one! The spectator chooses a card from the deck. The spectator rips up their card into quarters. The spectator keeps one of the quarters and gives the other three back to the Magician.

The magician palces the three quarters into his hand and explains that he will try to connect the quarters together, but, as fairly as possible, with hand in full view the whole time, opens up his hand and reveals the three quarters to be missing.

He then asks the spectator if he has a wallet, to which the spectator promptly replies 'Yes' and removes his wallet from his pocket, opens the wallet, and finds three quarters of the exact same card! Not only that, the card has been restored! The other quarter of the card which the spectator has been holding the whole time can be seen to be the exact quarter ripped off. AND IT REALLY IS THE SAME QUARTER!

Cost
Ten quid from http://www.peter-harrison.com/connected.html or £7.50 if you buy it with his other download.

Difficulty
(1=easy to do, 2=No sleights, but not so easy, 3=Some sleights used,
4=Advanced sleights used, 5=Suitable for experienced magicians only)

I'd say a 2. There are a couple of moves. But to call them sleights is an overstatement of the century.

Review
In short - WOW. This effect is totally amazing! It can be done in the street, walkaround, table hopping, weddings. It's so versatile!

Peter goes into such depth in this effect. I think it was 43 full pages of writing and pictures. Now, I know what you're thinking. 43 pages is a bit long but let me tell you this - I hate reading long articles, but this, this held my attention for the whole time. You can see the amount of thought put into this effect. It has been tested with 9 different magicians and tweaked around until its perfect.

He even states that he is a perfectionist, and you can tell. For example when he is explaining one of the "sleights", you think you could just perform it one way. But he starts explaining why he does it that way and the psycology behind it. To make it look CLEANER! But, I can't think of any part of this effect which may have the spectator thinking a move looked suspicious, even the parts where he explaining how to make it look clean, you can do it an easier way, and it will still look as clean as Mr Muscle.

What you read is true. The spec rips their selected card into peices. The pieces vanish at the magicians finger tips about 3 seconds after they are placed in the hand, all by a natural movement. And, if you feel uncomfortable with the vanish, he even tells you what to say for the perfect misdirection! And finally, the 3 quarters of the same card are restored in the SPECTATORS wallet, without the magician ever touching it.

Unfortunately, the card cannot be signed easily. But, Peter does explain a way to have the card signed.

Also, this is not impromptu, and it does require a setup. It cannot be done infront of the spectators but all the things you need are what EVERY magician WILL have (ie. Cards :))

Overall
This is a totally killer effect. And for only £10, it's more than a steal. Most of the "sleights" used are designed for this effect and are mastered within about 15 minutes of practise.

He said he wanted to make it as risk free as possible, and my God has he done it! This IS the official closer I will be using for all my performances now. Hell, he even tells you a full routine that goes perfectly with Connected. And, he even teaches you the routine aswell.

It's no understatment that with the right practise, this trick is easily the one that will stick in the specs mind and WILL make your reputation.

I would give it a 10/10 but everyone gives them out willy nilly. So 9.5/10.
C.U.P.S sufferers: 10/10
Price: 11/10

If I missed anything please feel free to ask. Or you can email Peter. He is a very decent bloke indeed. Thanks for reading!

LeftEye,

Thanks a lot for the review and the kind words! It's been very exciting getting all this positive feedback but I tell you it is motivating me to work even harder in the future.

I thank you from my heart for giving my material a chance and I am pleased you will be using this as your closer. Trust me, people can call me big-headed all they want but this is the perfect closer for me. Maybe someone else has a different perfect effect but for ME this cannot be beaten. It's exactly what I needed, that's why I designed it that way.

I'd love to hear more from you in the future and to hear how things go in performance! I'll be performing this effect in a few days to David Tennant (the current Dr Who) so I'll post a performance story if I can find the correct part of the forums...

Anyway, thank you so much for your kind words and compliments. It's great when people are as excited about an effect as I am... seriously, NOBODY enjoys this one more than me :)

Thanks agian! Take it easy,

P.H.

p.s. You mispelled my surname in your Subject. It's not a big deal for me but it will help people you use the search engine! :)

Lindz,

Why not so cheap? :) Yeah I want to make money like everyone else and have a living but I make more than enough money through my perforamance career. Connected was originally a DVD release which actually had several months of work already finished. I got screwed over by a company helping out with the DVDs and it got me thinking. I could have continued with that project but I thought, "what the heck, if I do it as a digital download I can charge less". You see, I would have had to charge quite a lot to cover production costs.

This way its:

1. Cheaper for you guys!

2. I can write how I feel about things which I feel often helps magic more than "talking".

3. Younger magicians will develop their own style of performing this effect rather than just copying how I do it on video. Although I do include tips for presentation and patter.

Several of the industry's top performers have told me to bump the price up a bit but I feel it is fine. I can always charge you a bit more though if you like? :p

Hope that helped you a bit! Take it easy,

P.H.

Hi Peter thanks for the quick response and sorry to hear about the dvd situation. I was just curious of the price that's all because it sounds like a truly stunning piece of magic and that's cheap. Good to see you have your customers in mind it seems to be a rarity these days.

I feel I'm doing my bit for magic. I could not care about how younger magicians perform my material or I could not care about getting as much knowledge across as possible, but it would be a crime against the art.

Just doing my bit and trying to keep the magic alive. I have the upmost respect for what we do.

I'm kind of a "people person" so expect quick replies from me :) Seriously, you can always get in touch with me so never feel otherwise.

Peter you seem a really sound guy, its great to have you on here. I was having a look at this trick and deciding whether to buy or not. But after reading your comments I'm gonna be buying this very soon.

Apart from the niceities its also good to know that you have been performing this properly for ages so it must be a very strong and practical trick for the real world.

Can anybody please help me? I'm having terrible problems controlling my streetmagic- I can't walk down a street without turning into a pub.

I'm sure LeftEye will get in touch soon and answer your question. I'm not sure what his actual details are so I cannot check myself or I would to help you out!

One thing I did do though was dig up a review for the other product available. http://www.elusionist.com/forums/showthread.php?t=67488

Hopefully it helps you out and if not I guess you can speak to LeftEye soon!

Take it easy,
