Review: My Favorite Rope Trick

Postby .robb. » Apr 27th, '07, 16:55

The Effect
Three unequal lengths of rope suddenly and visibly stretch to become equal! They then change back. The ropes may be examined before and after the trick begins. One of the most popular magic tricks of all time.

Cost
$2.50-$5.00 on various sites.

Difficulty
(1=easy to do, 2=No sleights, but not so easy, 3=Some sleights used,
4=Advanced sleights used, 5=Suitable for experienced magicians only)

Simple routine that would make decent filler or segway. If nothing else, you get rope for other tricks for a couple of bucks. Doesn't require a lot of patter.

Overall
Hard to rate on a scale of 1-10 because I'm not a fan of rope tricks. It's worth adding to an order but nothing to go out of your way to get.

It's commonly known as the Professors Nightmare and when performed well along with some good patter it is something that shold NOT be under estimated.

It's a very strong and visual piece of magic and it forms the basis of many other rope routines such as Fibre Optics to name one.

It's also an easy piece to learn and I recommend it to everyone.

It's not really an optical illusion - it just looks like one!

This can be done as a feature effect, and has been by some of the greatest, including Slydini. To do this effect well, it actually takes some practice. I would give it a "2" difficulty rating, but it is a routine needing practice and rehearsal to present it well (more practice than a self-working trick). There are also several subtleties that can heighten the effect.

Slydini used to do his cut and restored rope effect, and then follow with this one, leaving the rope in the hands of a befuddled audience. It's fun to do, and can look like real magic.

There is a reason this effect became so popular! So, I would give the effect a 10! On the other hand, I am completely unfamiliar with the instruction set that comes with this version, so I can't comment on this particular version at all.

Best wishes-

-Steve
