phpBB censorship

Postby Swest » May 25th, '07, 17:44

Firstly apologies if this has been suggested before. There are already a number of filters in place within phpBB that are used to censor obscenities etc. e.g. c*** (not the best). Would it perhaps be a good idea to also put in similar filters for a glossary of aardvarks etc., e.g. DL, TP, SS, BD, QFJKZ (ok that last one was made up) - would this save some of the time that the moderators have to expend in moderating etc. and would serve as a guide for those not familiar with the need for such abbreviations. Also, if it were implemented within phpBB I believe (correct me if I am wrong) that it would also be retroactive, so would affect all past and future posts.

You're right that such changes made now would be applied to all previous posts and there are one or two of the filters in place already which do what you suggest. As long as we're careful to make sure that use of the phrases to be censored wouldn't be part of normal day to day script, which is unlikely but needs to be taken into account, then it's worth thinking about.

PS We have D/L, TT and IT already set up - hopefully!

It seems like Talkmagic spam defenses are down this week? That's the third enemy that has broken our defense system this week..

But you've not seen the amount of spam posts that it has caught. I must have disapproved at least spam 20 posts today myself.

Becky is right, very occasionally a spam post gets through (we know how and why but phpBB hasn't developed the answer yet!) but the amount you don't see is staggering! Rob and Becky each deal with dozens and dozens every day and in the same time scale I usually delete well over 250 spammers before they can post their rubbish. Currently we have a rash of spam posts to do with cheap medication, drugs, fake passports (I kid you not!), and cheap cigarettes. In the good old days it was cell phones, trainers and amazingly cheap electronic goods. Also porn.

As always, if you see a spam post, the best course of action is to not respond or reply but PM a Mod to make sure they get to check it out asap.

In recent months the spam seems to be mainly Michael Kors stuff - whoever he is and whatever he sells....
