I'd like to propose that reviews contain two scores; the first being the quality of the effect(s) and the second being the value for money.

that's quite a nice idea. I tend to take both into consideration when giving a score but having them seperate would be nice.

quality of effect? as in what? the mechanical creation of it? or just as how good it is as a 'thing'?

i would say value for money might be quite difficult to judge, i might rate a £30 book cos i got say 3 things out of it, but someone else might only get 1 thing from it...

dunno..might just be cos I'm tired right now :?

Quality of magicness.

Well, let's imagine an effect called "Big O" which makes women in the audience orgasm. I'd say that is a top quality effect. If it cost 100 pounds, it would also be good value for money.

However, let's take "the penguin book of card tricks", say, which is actually pretty pants (for arguments sake). That might be of low quality, but seeing as it cost 2 quid, it's good value for money.

Quality is of effect and props.

Value for Money is a measure of "you get what you pay for".

I think props like this already existing which come in at way under £100

Anyway, I'll get me coat

Great idea on the value for money thing but surely can you not judge that yourself on a good description of the effect? To me Bang on is worth the £70 for example for others it's a rip off. Similar to the book answer above.

It'll also boil down to peoples disposable income some what :)

That said, the more info the better

It's all a bit subjective, but the very fact that people have different levels of disposable income makes the separation all the more important. It might be that an effect is ballistic, but a ripoff, and is given a 7/10, which is misleading.
