Well, I spend more time mending the forum these days than making constructive posts. I used to enjoy posting up effects, ideas, help, reviews etc. But it seems that I've lost the time and incentive.

I know that I am not the most active member on the forum but I do value it. It's helped me tremendously in my magical journey by being a great resource of information and by introducing me to some great people.
Let's get talkMagic back!!

Seige, Nick and other moderators, Is there anything that we can do to help aid you guys in the quest of reversing the current trend? Frankly we all have a problem here, can we do anything to help you guys resolve it?

best

Martin

I hate to sound like a big suck up but thats a real shame as I would put your posts among some of the most insightful I've come across on here. Not a suck up but an honest observation.

Incorporate a new function maybe?

Postby magicforfun » Jun 12th, '07, 18:30

I have an idea that might help, both to the post count syndrome and to the filtering user comments solution mentioned in another thread. I'm not sure, but tell me what you think and let's see what we can do about it. I usually log in to Tripadvisor due to my job, and there's a clever and simple little function after a review/post. There's an option to click if the post was helpful to you or not. This makes it possible to measure "usefullness" of a post and hence a poster by acumulation. A ratio usefullness/meaningless will then be calculated and can give certain posting privileges to the poster. As the ratio will be based on acumulation that means it will not be so easy b******g about a poster and block him just because you don't like him. Just a thought.

Edit: this will also give a solution to the more subjective part of quality of posts.

Siege: Maybe you say that's madness from a technical point of view. And you're probably right, but I just give my two pennies worth here and hope I can help in any way. I'm sure you're working on it and that'll you come up with a solution. I would hate seeing it end up in something that has been mentioned in earlier posts.

The mods here are far too lenient, but that's partly what makes this a good forum. I'd suggest temporary bans, and blind deleting of useless posts, but then that's what other magic forums are about (well one in particular)
It's just the price you have to pay now and again.

As to the actual point of this thread: is anything like this possible? Do you think it would help stop the mass posting of certain people?

Ps: Thank you Seige and all the other mods for making this forum possible and keeping it as great as it is. This thread was also only made as a forum REQUEST and hopefully as an idea to possibly improve the forum.
Thank you

Yes Mr Brookish, I know, and I appreciate your post has been hijacked.

The 'number of posts' really does mean diddly squat here, and the titles are just legacy phpBB stuff.

I would much prefer to see a 'member since xx/xx/2004' type badge.

It's a bit of a chore to change it currently as the site admin/owner is always busy.

We'll look into the titles, though. I am sure we can change them to something more comical such as:

0-100 posts: casual poster
101-500 posts: addicted
501-1000 posts: too much time on their hands
1001 posts plus: truly over-keen

etc.

Even that may be a help ;)

Nobody said "big description". Where did you find that phrase? It's called introduction and a "hello" is not an introduction.
It would be a whole different story if the thread was actually called: "Hello" or "Saying Hello", but it's basically called: "Introduction".

Like Seige wrote a while back, it's the pollite thing to do, just like when you enter somebody's home for the first time, you introduce yourself.

I know it's not obligatory, but it helps and I really think that the minimum should be: Nickname, age, country and skills/interests in magic.
Then we know enough for replies, help and tips.

Why do you think this exists?

I have a contribution, please just here me out:

Why don't we, all get a limit of posts when we join. Then, once that limit has gone, we can ask whether we are allowed another set of posts by the people of the forum.

I'll try to explain it better.

I join the forum. I have a limit of 50 posts. I better make those 50 posts be useful and informative, otherwise when I have no posts left (I have, in effect, 'used' them all up) I cannot redeem myself. Once I've used my posts, I ask the moderators (or whatever would be the best way) to be granted a new set of posts, maybe 100 the next time round.

Then, the moderators would look at my first 50 posts that I had been allowed (without everyone knowing my reputation) and if they saw that they were just useless 'Welcome' posts that weren't very helpful to alot of people, they would deny me access to new posts and I would no longer be allowed to be a member of they forum.

This would get rid of all the users who just want big post counts, and would also put a small amount of pressure on yourself to make better contributions to the forums.

I think it would be a good idea.

[EDIT] Oh, and yor allowance of posts would only be visible to yourself, no-one else would know how many posts you have left, and there would be no 'total posts' figure.

Good idea, but - unfortunately - it would mean even more work for the Mods here.

Things on TM, of late, have calmed down a good degree, and very few folks are still posting solely to increase their post-count. Even the newer members are behaving themselves

The Mods here are very quick to spot potential issues, and act on them accordingly, so I really can't see any pressing need to make time-intensive alterations at this point.

That's quite a nice idea, a kind of trial period. But it would mean more work for the mods.

What is really a pain is introductions... people saying 'hello' followed by loads of one-word posts of 'Welcome'.

Serves no purpose, and makes moderating a hard job.

Especially when weeding out the spam posts and obscenities.

Maybe "Introductions" should be just that... an introduction. posts cant be added to the intro. the introduction is an opportunity for a new member to tell the TM community about him/herself, the posts of introduction cant be replied to.

???
