The Effect
"You show a penny and a five pence piece. The spectator holds the 5p tightly in his fist. The Penny is touched with a pen and it instantly and visibly changes into a 5p!! The spectator opens his hand and discovers he is now holding the penny!! Incredible!! Everything can be examined."

Cost
£15

Available from International Magic. I believe Penny Change is an exclusive.

Difficulty
(1=easy to do, 2=No sleights, but not so easy, 3=Some sleights used,
4=Advanced sleights used, 5=Suitable for experienced magicians only)

1
Penny Change is very easy to perform and does not require any sleights per se. Suitable for all skill levels including the novice magician.

Review
Included in the package:
 Two identical blue felt tip pens.
 The gimmicks

You receive the gimmicked pen plus a normal one for switching purposes. Although the pen does the job perfectly well, I was disappointed that it was not of a higher quality. However, I guess this takes the heat away from the pen once the transposition has taken place, as it is just an innocent-looking felt tip pen (!). And what a visual exchange it is; the instant the pen touches the penny, it immediately changes into the 5p piece. The spectator is then left to open up their hand to discover the penny. I rarely have the spectator question the pen as they are always so gobsmacked, but you could easily carry the normal pen with you and switch it out as required. (To date, I have had only one spectator ask to examine the pen).

The other gimmick is of high quality and has the added bonus of being quite versatile so it can be used in a variety of other coin effects. It should be noted that I purchased this effect a number of years ago, so International Magic may or may not be supplying different pens now. In either case, I would recommend Penny Change as it is easy to perform and packs a punch.

Overall
Penny Change is a very visual coin transposition that makes a strong impact on the spectator. As simple to perform as it is, I would suggest you put the practice in to perfect the required moves so you can do it smoothly and without hesitation. You are left clean at the end and everything is examinable. Penny Change remains one of my favourite coin effects.

Score: 9/10

Are you saying it's exclusive to internationalmagic.com :?:

If so, I recomend you get Double X for about £5.00, which looks remarkably similar - available from many places. Google search brings up a few:
http://www.ollies-magic.com/index.php?m ... cts_id=274
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Double-X-Rating-P ... efid=store
http://www.magictricks.com/coins/2xpen.htm

Granted, it's not exactly the same trick, but in my eyes it does the same job  .

QUESTION:
If we can sue McDonalds for making us fat and cigarette companies for giving us cancer; why can't we sue Smirnoff for all the ugly gits we've sh*gged ??

Yes, it would appear Double X is virtually the same effect, albeit with a US penny instead of a UK penny. However, it is less than half the price of Penny Change, so perhaps represents a better buy if you don't mind using a US coin.

There's also a version been around for yonks which uses a Chinese coin and a rather ugly plastic 'magic wand'.

It's called 'Chop Suey'.

This variation is nothing new, really. Except the fact that the overall effect price is cheap enough for a shell alone.

Frankly, I find it a rather ugly effect, but horses for courses. And a VERY nice and clear review. I particularly like the care and attention to presentation! (the review, not the effect ;))
