That's a good excuse for an early Christmas present, I reckon.

the most common card I've found picked by girls is the 7 of hearts, men tend to be much more random but there does seem to be a trend towards black picture cards.

themagicwand wrote:The book test is of course the (current) pinnacle of the naked theory - but I seem to have discovered a weird anomoly (sp). I picked out 3 books of my own at random - one a Philip Pullman book, one was Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, and one was Philip Reeve's Mortal Engines. The Hitchhikers Guide and Mortal Engines worked a treat, but the Philip Pullman book was scoring hits at a much lower frequency. I checked against other Pullman books to find the same oddity. Now I'm sure it's just me or bad luck, but has anyone else (Tomo?) noticed that certain authors score lower or higher than the expected - for whatever reason???

My boxed set of His Dark Materials is with the daughter of a friend at the moment, so I called her last night and did the necessary. I got 4 out of 6 plus a very near miss (does instead of done - same word and concept, just different tense), so it may just be bad luck. Orwell scores very high, but then so too does most junk mail!

Bad luck sounds about right!

I also do the "pick any card", then wait a few seconds then say "but don't choose the queen of hearts or ace of spades coz they're the most common choices." Many, many times the spec will look at me in awe and I'll say "you chose the queen of hearts didn't you? Well now you're going to to have to chose another." So you get a hit before you've even started.

The ace of spades is not that popular, but I include it in the above statement because people expect it to be more popular than it is.

a new girl at work started the other week..i had the seven of diamonds face up in the face down pack, and the seven of hearts on top of the deck face down..

"don't name any of the high cards like the queen of hearts or ace...but any free choice of card will do that you like..."

"7 of diamonds..." asked her to spread the deck...there it was...she got all spooked...

im sure you could work out a good psychological ACAAN deck with some thought...

Dunno whether we should take this to the NM forum, but what about involving Banachek's concept of limiting the spectator's reach by naming cards not usually picked, to limit the choices to the popular ones?

themagicwand wrote:Also as an aside - it would be nice to get some statistics on the cards chosen freely by laypeople. I think that those of us who take magic seriously will know what perhaps the top 5 or 6 would be, but it would be nice to find or conduct some serious research.

I'd like to comment on this at some length, but don't want to get too far off-topic here, so for those who are interested or pursued this comment, I'll start a thread under Miscellaneous.

As for Naked Mentalism, this thread (along with other things I've read about the book) has convinced me to pull the trigger, so I'll be putting in my order probably next week, and hopefully able to share some specific thoughts on it. I'm very interested in delving into it.

Yes, it's one that I shall be ordering very soon. Sounds just the sort of thing that interests me.

Well my copy turned up this morning, and so far I have got very little work done - I can see the information in this book is going to take me to a whole new level, especially for impromtu stuff and really powerful mind reading effects. Well worth the wait!

I can predict lots of study time for me now!

Great Stuff :D

Just one question though - do I have to perform this stuff with no clothes on - winter is coming???

I've been having lots of fun talking to people on the phone about their loose change. :)

I've been working on book tests over the phone too, and my success rate is good, but for some reason I find non-fiction (and especially magazines and tabloid newspapers) to give me better results than novels.

I think this phenomenon might be down to the style of individual authors. In tabloids the language is necessarily simpler and the words shorter, so you have more opportunities for direct hits. At the other end of the spectrum, each word in the more serious end of the literary fiction market has to justify its presence, so alternative ways of wording things can run riot.

what i've found helpful is to peak at what book they're reading. this can give you insight into the kinds of words in the book. for instance, if they're reading a history textbook, their word is probably not going to be "said" because there are going to be little to no quotes. little details like this can oftentimes save you.

also, if you live in the US, this might be of use when doing coin predictions:

Taken the plunge after reading all the good reviews. Wasn't what I was expecting to be honest but seems very "different" in a good way. Hopefully I'll get the jist of it over the weekend.
