Cost

Cheapest I could find online was £19.99 per volume at:

http://www.magicmagic.co.uk

Incidentally, this is where I bought mine! Average price found elsewhere was around £27 per volume.

Difficulty

(1=easy to do, 2=No sleights, but not so easy, 3=Some sleights used,
4=Advanced sleights used, 5=Suitable for experienced magicians only)

Using the scale above – it’s a 3 as there are some sleights used (albeit they are coin basics) but on a difficulty of performance rating, once you’ve mastered the taught slights then the routines are no more than a 2.

Review

Despite this DVD being released in 2004, the filming was obviously from some time ago as David looks very much younger. The print onto DVD is a little grainy but is more than adequate for it's purpose and the whole DVD is dubbed as David’s English most probably wasn’t up to the job at the time. This doesn’t really matter that much to be honest as you’ll be looking at his hands throughout the footage. If you’ve seen David’s Real Secrets of Magic DVD already, then you will be expecting the French accent  .

The format is the usual – watch the routine and then the explanation. These routines look to be far more advanced than they actually are but despite this, they rely on basic moves such as the classic palm, false transfer, finger palm, Bobo switch and a whole host of other subtleties and moves, and believe me when I say that Stone has some lovely moves. Each is taught in good detail with some marvelous tips on presentation.

Each sleight is taught at a good pace and is covered from numerous different camera angles to leave you with no doubt as to what's going on and what you should be emulating.

The routines are each around 30 to 60 seconds long, give or take a few seconds and each one is as powerful as the next. Each and every one fooled me on the first time of watching (which isn’t hard to achieve  ) and one routine compliments the other, as well as being a progression from what you have learnt in the previous routine. There would be no difficulty in stringing ALL of these routines together into one long coin routine without it becoming repetitive or boring for the audience.

Overall

In my opinion this is the coin magic equivalent of what ‘Born to Perform’ is for card magic. If you’re a beginner who is looking to learn some basic coin routines then look no further than this DVD. Bundle it with a copy of Bob's Modern Coin Magic book and these will keep you going for some time.

David Stone has a knack of making everything look easier than it possibly could be. However, there is nothing here that also can’t be mastered with some committed practice, and then performed with some confidence to make the routines look equally as impressive (and magical of course  ).

Once you have learnt this stuff, it’s real EYE CANDY!

It's not really an optical illusion - it just looks like one!

Thanks for the review. I've been looking at these for quite a while and it looks like I may just have to buy them after all.

Thanks for taking the time to review these Dat.

I couldn't find another review on the entire intaynet. Can you believe that?

I got impatient and ordered volume 2 anyway, i like the sound of the coin flurry.

I'm currently up to the 'Guarded Hunt'. This is a brilliant dvd. If you liked the One Coin routine and Mulberry from The Real Secrets of Magic, then this is right up your street. Stones' (or the dubbing guys :) ) tips on subtleties are a huge benefit.

Once i have a coin routine up to performance standard i tend to do it a bit quick (dam nerves). For me one of the most helpful things on the dvd was in the first 30secs  ......count to 3 before/between doing the magic bits!

I picked up Vol 2 as well. Have just read your review on it.....little bit scared now.
