Thanks for the info on this. I had already worked out that despite any setup that may be required, in order for it to get the reactions that it does, it would need to APPEAR that it was an impromptu effect.

As long as it appears to the audience to be impromptu, then the set up is immaterial and it's then up to the skill of the magician.

I think that I'm going to like this one!

I have had this DVD since 9am Saturday morning which is impressive because I only ordered it from World Magic Shop at 4pm on Friday (i.e. the evening before) so I'm absolutely knocked sideways by their level of service.

The DVD itself is very impressive as well and yes I'm sure most of us can work out that some pre-show work will be required and have a pretty good guess at what that might be.

What you are paying for is a well-crafted, quality explanation of the presentation, the patter, the timing and all the little nuances that will turn this, in the right hands, into absolute gold-dust.

If you are in the market for a real reputation maker (a oft misused phrase I know) then this could well be the one.

I can't wait to try this out - excuse me sir, can I just borrow your glass for a minute?

I have been waiting for this DVD

Postby michaeljfitch » Jul 23rd, '07, 10:48

You know an Effect is great when a member of the public tells you about it!
This happened to me at a gig.
I was Entertaining a couple recently and the guy said " Can you bend the
wine glass".

I then bent a spoon for him and everyone was freaking out,
but this guy asked again if I could bend the Wine glass.
He told me he had seen David Penn do this.
I asked if he was on medication or if he had been drinking heavily, and
surely he meant David had bent cutlery,
but then he told me had the glass at home still.
I have been waiting for David to put this DVD out.
I hope you don't buy this DVD as when a chap at a gig asks you if you can
bend the Wine Glass as Michael J Fitch did you wont be able to. he he.
Best Wishes.

I received this yesterday and gave it a run through last night and I can echo what the preceeding posts have said about this effect.

Those of you who are under 18 (and I know a lot of you are), save yourself the money on this one as you won't be able to purchase some of the required 'bits' for the setup. I won't say anymore - you'll have to trust me on this one. If you're over 18 then you won't have problems.

A great routine with some great expectations. Not too difficult but when performed correctly then the reactions should be amazing.

May have some neighbours round at the weekend for a drink or two so I can try it out

I think that something needs to be addressed here: it's not just the under 18s which may have a problem... it's people looking for a 'quick trick' which may suffer.

Anyone who's not patient, studied the art of performance mentalism, and isn't adept with audience direction will NOT find any merit in the way this is handled.

Before we get a load of posts from whining Strebler/Derren clones, the advice is simple: This is a 'pro' piece of magic for real-world use. It won't really 'just work' on family and friends if you're the casual packet-trick worker.

But it IS a real gem in a working environment for an experienced pro.

Performed this last night at a family do and freaked evrybody with it. The DVD explains the handling very well and wont take long for a professional to master before you put it in the act.
Will be performing this at my Close up gigs from now on , Starting Tonight.
P.S
Hi Todd hope you are well

This is very true and I shouldn't have taken it for granted that those reading would reliase this.

The secret of Refraction is more about the skill of presentation and performance than the setup and sleight of hand. Without the necessary experience and confidence you will just not deliver this in a way that does it justice, irrespective of your age.

Refraction

Postby Gochos The Greek » Jul 27th, '07, 11:01

As a dealer I cannot truly recommend any effect that is a true reputation maker until now. Refraction fits the bill. How stronger can you get, borrowing a wineglass from the spectator, bending it in their hands and then signing the glass for them to take away with them.

Since releasing this we have had quite a few people phone in and email saying how strong this can be once performed at a Gig.

As mentioned above, this isn’t for the casual packet trick worker, this is for the serious performer.

We even had a phone call from a well known Mentalist in the USA wanting to purchase every unit of Refraction so we don’t release this. He knows how strong this type of effect is and wanted only a few people to know how to perform it. He also mentioned David Penns handling has brought the bending wine glass type of effect to the next level. This sums up the strength of this effect.

I hope you didn't oblige him!
I'm now all fired up and ready to go. I've been practising this in front of the mirror and and it looks pretty damn impressive.

Excellent News. I look forward to seeing you do it for the barman (what's his name again? bless him) at the pub after the next IMS meeting.

or better still maybe we will see you perform it during the close up session of the Ipswich Magical Society Convention this year?

Performed Refraction tonight at my last booking ( 2 hours ago) and its a real winner. I REALLY agonise over adding a new effect into my sets, as I'm sure most of you guys also do. I was looking for a nice extra something just to do for the clients table. I have to take my hat off to David for sharing this (I would have kept it to myself!)

Good advise in the DVD, the strongest part is not the first bend, but the second phase, where the spectators experience the glass bending in their hands, for me that's what will keep me using this.

BTW The catering manager noticed the bent glass, and for just a moment, I thought ( opps, should have cleared this with them first, but no problem at all, and I was asked to repeat the effect for the floor staff, so they seems to not care about the glass's at all)
Next booking is at the IVY, so I'll see if they don't care about the crystal glasses too :)

Highly recommended for workers!

I've been staying in a couple of hotels over the past two nights and it's strange that I suddently started taking notice of the wine glasses that they use in the restaurant.

For those who perform fork bending routines I started examining forks a long time ago which sounds really sad but I'm sure that I'm not the only one.

Anyway, it would appear so far that hotels use a standard wine glass (large) that is near identical to those in Asda that I've been using to practice with (£1.79 for four). I suppose that it depends on where you are performing but you could perhaps take your own along and just do the prep with theirs only if you need to.
