50/50 - by Yankee Tom

Postby Mandrake » Oct 23rd, '03, 10:12

Description:
50/50 - by Yankee Tom

Cost & Availability:
TBA – this is an advance review to get your juices flowing (ooo-er!)

Difficulty:
A very, very easy 1
(1=easy to do, 2=No sleights, but not so easy, 3=Some sleights used, 4=Advanced sleights used, 5=Suitable for experienced magicians only)

Review:
A real sucker trick – in the nicest possible way. You can give your victim many chances to guess a card correctly but they never do. You show two cards, one face up, one face down and then turn them over to show the other sides – the faces are different of course - let’s assume 10H and JC. You put the cards behind your back and mix them up then bring out one card face down and offer your spectator the 50/50 chance of a guessing which card it is. They say 10H and you immediately bring out that card from behind your back to show they got it wrong. You repeat the show of both sides and faces, put the cards behind your back again and so on for as many times as you feel you can get away with it. After this little gem, nobody will ever ask you to play cards or gamble – you’re just too darned good! The title of 50/50 describes the apparent chance of success – in reality it’s 100/0 in your favour!

Overall:
Easy peasy – you can perform this within seconds of reading the instructions and it can be easily kept in your wallet or wherever for a swift impromptu effect at a moment’s notice. Only two Bicycle cards are used, nothing is hidden in your back pocket, your belt or your Aardvark. It’s very tempting to suggest you could arrange a friendly bet of a fiver or so on the outcome but, as you never lose, that would depend on how much you value your friends and your life!

Ratings:
10/10 - for sheer cheek!

Yes, but you'd need to be a bit sneaky to do it. Having said that, Magic is ALL sneaky! Not so much a sleight perhaps more like a cheeky flourish would be required.

Without divulging the secret it's difficult to say too much but I can certainly think of one way you could take the cards from a full deck so it's a strong possibility.

Sounds like a good trick that could be done after Gauci's "Eye to Eye". ie, you guess where the coin is 5 times out of 5, and yet they can't guess where the card is at all...

Ozman & HT, you'll need to have words with Tom over pricing and supply - as I mentioned above this was an advance review and a commercial arrangmenent is still to be sorted as far as I know. (Try offering him wads of cash - it might work!)

Note:
Midge - this effect is a pre-release for a commercial sale.

By 'tipping the gaff', you are effectively making this a non-starter for Yankee Tom.

The effect, I know, uses basic sleights and an age old method. The question here is the routine, which is relatively original. Tom will of course be crediting (as always) any original authors.

Thanks for the concern, but please refrain from being so explicit. And in fairness, the actual effect you mentioned earlier in your previous posting is quite different.
