Postby Kemo » Aug 30th, '07, 15:22

what do you say/do when a spec says "i bet you like/watch criss angle"

or when they say i saw david blaine throw a card through a window... can you do that?

i have this urge to tell them how much i dislike angle but i don't think that is the right thing to do

I say ' David.. David who?'

Blaire?.. Belend..?? Oh sorry.. Blaine.. yeh I have heard of him.. he's supposed to be pretty good? What's he like? Ive never seen him before..?

If they try to make out I should know who he is I reply

'' Have you heard of Cardini? or Elmsley? What about the professor Dai? These guys are the most famous name in magic? Have you heard of those?

No.. oh right.. because those are the guys I look up to.. I dont know much about this bellend character but Im sure if he is that good, one day he'll make a name for himself ''

If they ask me if I can do the card through window... like David blaine.. I say '' Sure, have a you go a camera crew to hand? '' bad I know but I hate being asked that..

then for those people I do card through window anyway at some point during the routine.. something simple like kaos is enough.. and they soon forget the camera crew comment. But its great misdirection to get them off wanting to know the answer.

I often say..."I don't like to make judgements on a magician and his work until I have seen them perform for a live audience..."

They often say "where does he perform live?" to which I say "He doesn't" and leave it like that.....enough said, makes the point that there may be more to the show than what you see, but doesn't give them the "oh he is just jealous" idea about me....I make it sound like I would honestly love to watch them perform live.

With that said, does anyone know of any actual live shows done by Blaine and Angel? I have never seen them travel and perform like Copperfield, Burton, etc....so I assume they don't or rarely do perform in these types of settings.

Being English no one mentions Chris Angel (or Kriss Angel, for that matter) though I have been asked if I know Debbie McGee before...

Criss Angel has a stage show with Cirque du Soleil starting next year at the Luxor.

I can't speak for Blaine - but Criss Angel performed in Madison Square Garden in 1998 - shortly afterwards landing a Broadway show (Mindfreak) which ran until 2003, performing around 600 shows. Not quite as "rare" as one might have thought...

It was actually OFF-Broadway, but I'm just being picky. :D

While considered by theater-goers to be "off" broadway, if we want to get technical the show was held in a theater ON Broadway. But hey, let's not split hairs! :D

I find it upsetting that although magicians hate any successful TV magician, we feel we have to bad mouth them or make jibes at them somehow feel as if we have to be one up on them.

im in england no one mentions criss angel at all, hes just not big here.

with regards to Blaine iv been asked so many times if i can do the one David Blaine does

my response is this

"no he doesnt do any of my tricks"

that way its a loght hearted answer theres no little quips about editing or camera trickery or anything else you have seemed professional and polite about another magician

not saying stuff like

well im better because he has a camera crew and he can pick his audience and his foot was on the ground and blah blah blah

My line to people who ask about T.V magicians I say "Give me the money and all the backup staff they have and I will do as they do or maybe somthing you request" This in my mind helps them to appriciate a live performance rather than one on T.V.

This is also belittling someone else by saying that their magic is all camera trickery and that yours is better. The specs believe that Blaine's stuff is performed up close in the street, 'live' as such.
You might as well say "I haven't got my special trick coins and gaffed cards with me."
