Derren Brown and Corinda

Postby donkeylord » Sep 8th, '07, 16:02

I have just finished reading 13 steps to mentalism and I found that some of Derren's material is based on Corinda's 13 steps. Most specifically I am talking about the time that Derren beat 9 chess players simultaneously and although I have not read Derrens Tricks of the Mind it seems that his mnemonics's for "enhanced memory" also comes from the 13 steps.

I just thought it was interesting to see a current magician applying Corinda's ideas on a larger scale. (all be it not all of the idea's are Corinda's but they are from his book and he gives credit where it is do).

I do not own any of Derrens books or DVDs but i was curious as to whether he gives credit to people such as Corinda and others for his effects. (I did just order tricks of the mind however so I guess I do own something of his).

You can look at almost any mentalist's effects and routines and find traces of 13 Steps. It is just such a good book. I'm willing to bet every working mentalist has read it.

Its pretty much the same as watching any card magician and then reading the Royal Road. Its the basis of all decent card magic and the 13 Steps is the basic to any good mentalism.

Maybe they should rename it The Royal Road to Mentalism.

Not a VERY long road though..just 13 steps...

as said, between 13 steps and practical mental magic/effects by annemann, pretty much most non-naked mentalism can be found in one form or another within those two books...

I'm very surprised more people arent downloading the annemann pdfs from lybrary actually...very cheap...easily adaptable to modern day work..

muhaha! that would be great:

Nah, theres something about the 13 steps I love, but then at other times i think i would like to see an updated presentation.

But to be BRUTALLY honest, its probably darker and more magical in its current format.

I'd like to see Uri Geller do a DVD version. That would be entertaining! :D

He was wonderful on I'm A Celebrity and there was a fabulous documentary about his a few years ago. Some of the most unintentionally hilarious tv I have ever seen. A legend!

I've spoken to him on the phone once or twice - yes, I actually had his mobile number! He was always very polite and nice, but is a very shrewd and clever guy - obviously.

BTW - no I wasn't some weird stalker. I was just carrying his love child is all.

That's a joke - in case any of Uri's people are watching. *gulp*

Not as creepy as MJ, but I know what you mean. He's a very funny character. I remember seeing him on QVC selling his 'Mind Power Kit' and one the items in it was a piece of cardboard with an orange dot printed in the middle which he claimed was charged with his 'energy'.
When asked whether he touched each one, he said he put his hand in the vat or orange paint.
I think he's great. He has an answer for everything and is a great entertainer.
