As someone who performs magic as a hobby (to friends & family) rather than a profession can anyone tell me if it would be a good idea to join a club? and what sort of reaction I may get if I did join?

The best way to learn is to associate and rub shoulders with other magicians (proffessional or not).
Try out a club, if you don't like it then seek out other magicians in your area and meet with them regularly.
