Postby pcwells » Oct 16th, '07, 20:54

Hiya,

I'm going to Geneva next week. I can't afford to make it a shopping trip but whay the heck...

Are there any worthwhile magic shops in Geneva?

Cheers,

I was there a few years ago (during the G8 summit riots!) and didn't fiund any magic shops as such. The castle in the old town had a museum with vintage playing cards on display, one of the large shops in the main shopping area carried a few magic tricks for sale but nothing you couldn't get here in UK.

Thanks Mandrake.

The credit card company will be disappointed. ;)

To be honest, most of the shops had been boarded up and riot police were there from France, Germany, Italy and Austria. Our hotel manager insisted the guests were escorted on and off the premises via the kitchen doors just in case of trouble and all this was because of the summit being held, not in Switzerland, but in France a few miles down the road! The choir at the Anglican church in Geneva was four members short, all Nuns, as they'd gone to join in the protests - the mind boggles! Once the place had been un-boarded things were better but Geneva really didn't seem to offer anything for the visiting magician other than being a great rehab place for sufferers of CUPS.

Best alternative would be a gentle walking tour of the old town, a boat trip on the lake to France and back, and of course getting as close as you can to that big fountain in the lake. The local food is good, the selection of alcohol is excellent but don't buy any Kit Kats - I bought one at the airport just to get some change for the taxi and found it was made in the UK!
