Sig / Avatar regulations

Postby Ian McCarthy » Oct 31st, '07, 17:40

Would it be possible to look at putting some regulations in place with what is and what is not acceptable re: forum sigs and avatars?

There are certain members (Not looking at anyone in particular JoeCarr14) who persist in using large distracting animated sig images. They add nothing to the forums and only distract you when you are trying to read posts.

Joecarr was asked previously to tone down his signature (politely) and I was under the impression he'd removed it completely...

I used to have a large 'advert' in mine, but removed it after I too noticed how bloomin' irritating it is scrolling through pages & pages of images.

Not to mention the fact that it eats up my data minutes when I am on the move and checking into TM... those bloody signatures are costing me pence!

I propose banning images completely for sigs. If someone wants to advertise (Which is the only real legitimate excuse for having an image, you maybe could advise that they instead buy a link on the side bar, or just use a text based ad.

(Short intake of breath) No, you can't get rid of avatars completely. Just look at Seige's, try it not stop for 20 secs. I can't help but smile.

edit: removed as everyone is complaining about it.... :D

sorry guys if anyone got annoyed it was only because i enjoy making fun little things like that and i think they make it more fun to read in a forum if everyone had one as they make it seem more individual and not just a repeat of posts that look like they are by the same people if they have no avatar.... i think they make the profile look personal and if everyone had one it wouldnt be annoying and it would make posts recognisable...

xD

Really? Wow. For avatars or for the signatures? That would seem truely dedicated.

Eeek... seemed I started a 'lack of clarification' discussion...

1. Oeb was talking about the large SIGNATURES, not Avatars. Granted, avatars look fine, and advertising signatures by advertisers are OK too. e.g. Tomo's looks actually quite nice, and doesn't cause epilepsy ;)

2. I personally don't pay for the signatures/avatars... but when using my PDA (mobile phone/browser) to use the internet when I'm out, I get charged per-Mb for using the internet... and large, animated signatures that really have no relevance or use add MB's to that.

3. Avatar size and filesize is governed and cannot exceed a set 'sensible' amount, wheras signature size is not.

Sorry for causing confusion... again!

Joe - no one is annoyed with you, and you haven't doene anything wrong, but thanks for removing it all the same..

For the record I too don't like big avatar like signtures for the reasons already stated.

To answer your point, they may make it more fun in a single message, but remember we have to look at that everytime you post something - and it doesn't take long before the fun wears off.

Just my thoughts.

The usual limit for image sigs is no larger than 2 or 3 lines of text - after that it gets very annoying as mentioned above.

If you use an accelerator like Fasterfox, it will pre-fetch and cache the images so that they load instantly even between browser sessions.

I quite like my signature, but if anyone wants me to remove it, let me know and I'll do so. I didn't realise they slowed things down for some people.
