I just heard from a mate that there was a show on sky 1 the other night that revealed load of secrets, including the raven, bite out coin and cig through coin, has anyone else heard this and was it really bad?

I saw it. It has been repeated a few times. It was another masked magician type thing who this time instead of revealing big stage tricks did a whole expose on street magic. The program basically revealed almost all of the tricks from the david blaine programs ( things such the levitation effect, The two card monte etc) the expose was extremly damaging to me as most of my tricks are card tricks and many where revealed. One good thing about it though is because it is on sky i have not met many people who have actually seen the program. I would also like to express my rage at these programs which to many people undermine their livelihood. The last masked magician claimed that he was revealing tricks so that magicians would be forced to invent new ones but in reality he was a nobody who just wanted some fame as was the guy in this program. He must be very un known because his mask was quite revealing( it was a phantom of the opera Style thing) but still nobody knows who he is.

Don't beleive for a moment that the damage done by his revelation is extensive in the least.
I am not defending the program, but I would like to point out that I still use all of the effects that he revealed, and I haven't yet hed one person who knew how they were done.
Besides that there are a million other tricks to use.
Just pay it the attention it deserves and get on with your special contributions to the art.
Remember that 90% of the magic is in the performance and 10% in the method.

Yeah i agree, they shudnt show that sorta stuff i mean of people like David Blaine and Paul Zenon who make a livng out of magic come off worst but theres nothing worse than a blow out when performing a trick and someone tells everyone how you done it. I'll have to learn more sleights and buy books instead of gimmicks untill the masked magician reveals how to do them anyways.

I strongly disagree with the magic revealed series. The whole thing about magic is that as soon as the trick is revealed, the MAGIC is lost, instead it becomes "oh, thats clever" and discarded. Many tricks of mine have baffled people for years, even after people have offered me money, I do not reveal my secrets.

I was always told the first two rules of magic were never reveal your secrets and never repeat a trick

I dont think we are affected all that much because even though some people now know how some things are done they will probabley forget and couldent do them if they tried.

The other night I was invited out for dinner with a group of about 10 guys. During the meal I had worked up enough courage to do a couple of card tricks and Coin Unique, despite having had a beer too many. Anyway, I had just vanished the penny through the plate, when one of the group started reeling out all these secrets that he had seen on Sky!

Out came the secrets to cigarette through coin, then bite out coin, then David Blanes name appearing on his arm, followed by how to levitate.

I was so pi**ed off!

Although the whole "David Blane" thing has brought an air of "Street Cred'" to magic, it has also awakened peoples interest in the subject. With the new found interest in magic, I suppose it was only inevitable that programs would come out revealing the secrets to many tricks, but it makes my blood boil to think that any couch potato who happened to catch the show now knows how to levitate!

One final point. If someone with no magic knowledge sees a David Blane program for example, they would be stunned. They would probably feel there was some real magic going on. If they were then to discover that the "Quarter" he was using had a big hole in the middle, that feeling that genuine magic had been used would be gone. "If he's using a trick coin, then all his magic is just that... tricks!"

Anyway, I stopped there, I had lost interest in showing the group my limited card skills!
