The other night I was invited out for dinner with a group of about 10 guys. During the meal I had worked up enough courage to do a couple of card tricks and Coin Unique, despite having had a beer too many. Anyway, I had just vanished the penny through the plate, when one of the group started reeling out all these secrets that he had seen on Sky!
Out came the secrets to cigarette through coin, then bite out coin, then David Blanes name appearing on his arm, followed by how to levitate.
I was so pi**ed off!
Although the whole "David Blane" thing has brought an air of "Street Cred'" to magic, it has also awakened peoples interest in the subject. With the new found interest in magic, I suppose it was only inevitable that programs would come out revealing the secrets to many tricks, but it makes my blood boil to think that any couch potato who happened to catch the show now knows how to levitate!
One final point. If someone with no magic knowledge sees a David Blane program for example, they would be stunned. They would probably feel there was some real magic going on. If they were then to discover that the "Quarter" he was using had a big hole in the middle, that feeling that genuine magic had been used would be gone. "If he's using a trick coin, then all his magic is just that... tricks!"
Anyway, I stopped there, I had lost interest in showing the group my limited card skills!
